I'm writing today to share with you The Dance Union - a podcast that is becoming an increasingly important resource to the dance/performance community. The Dance Union podcast is the brainchild of J Bouey and Melanie Greene. It captures timely and ephemeral conversations circulating within dance communities. It supports transparent discourse about a variety of topics including pay inequality, sexual harassment, abuse of power, and tokenism. The Dance Union podcast was born from the need to unify and amplify marginalized voices within the United States dance communities. A unique component of the podcast is that hosts J. and Melanie, both Black artists, center Black and marginalized experiences through culturally specific considerations, and first person advocacy. Guests are invited each week to share their experiences, and in addition to clever incorporation of movement into a digital medium, episodes offer History for the Future, a main topic of discussion, and statements envisioning a truly realized Dance Union. Here is a link to a few of their episodes, I hope you will take the time to listen! It is our great honor to continue working with the esteemed National Ballet of Cuba in bringing Alicia Alonso's artistic vision to the world. Please join family and friends in honoring the life and mourning the death of Douglas Crimp, who died on July 5th at age 74 after a long illness, which he met with uncommon grace. Much beloved by students and colleagues at the University of Rochester, where he was the Fanny Knapp Allen professor of Art History and Professor of Visual and Cultural Studies. World renowned as a scholar, writer, lecturer, and critic in visual art, dance, film, and queer studies. Author of numerous books and essays, many of which are classics in their fields. He could be found at a ballet, opera, concert, exhibition or some combination of these nearly every day. Strongly influenced by the gay liberation movement of the early 1970s, he became an inspirational and uncompromising AIDS activist in the ’80’s and ’90s. Survived by his spouse, Yoshiaki Mochizuki, sister Sandi Bloem, brother Gregg Crimp, and a wide circle of devoted caregivers and friends, whom he loved deeply. The afternoon, which is free and open to all, will be filled with performances and remarks by those dear to Douglas. A schedule is forthcoming and will be posted at danspaceproject.org. Douglas requested that his memorial be held at Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church and contributions be made in his name to Danspace Project.
