Step Afrika!, a 501(c)(3) organization, is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Founded in December 1994, the company is critically acclaimed for its efforts to promote an understanding of and appreciation for stepping and the dance tradition's use as an educational tool for young people worldwide. Step Afrika! reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year and has performed on many stages in North & South America, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean.
Based in Washington, DC, the company has been featured on CNN, BET, PBS & NPR as well as numerous books, documentaries and articles that seek to explore the tradition of stepping. Step Afrika! completes an annual 50-city tour of American colleges and universities from Maine to Mississippi. The company is a model for the use of stepping in educational settings, espousing themes such as teamwork, academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding. Step Afrika! has earned Mayor’s Arts Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education (2005); Innovation in the Arts(2008); and Excellence in an Artistic Discipline (2012). The Company has performed for two Presidents at the White House and is featured prominently at the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African-American History and Culture.
The full-time position of Deputy Director provides managerial and fundraising support to all aspects of Step Afrika!’s operations and will play a pivotal role on the management team.
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Management – responsible for the following:
❑ Managing administrative staff members and consultants;
❑ Creating and overseeing management of annual budget, and reviewing financial statements;
❑ Managing all Human Resources for the Company;
❑ Handling other general administrative duties, as needed.
Development – responsible for the following:
❑ Developing and implementing annual individual giving programs;
❑ Conducting personal solicitation of major individual gifts;
❑ Coordinating annual VIP Gala and other special events;
❑ Manage communication and meetings with the Board of Directors;
❑ Representing the Company at donor events and DC political and social events.
Education and Experience Requirements include the following:
❑ Bachelor’s Degree
❑ 5-8 years’ experience in Nonprofit Arts Management
❑ Proven track record of soliciting individual gifts of up to $2,500.00
❑ Must have strong writing and editing skills
❑ Must have strong computer skills and Microsoft Office Suite experience
❑ Must have experience with fundraising software, such as Patron Manager
❑ Willingness to work evenings and weekends, as needed
