OPPORTUNITY: Applications for 2017-18 EtM Choreographer + Composer Residencies - Deadline = June 1st

Dear Colleagues, 

We pleased to release the third round of our Choreographer + Composer Residencies applications! 
Deadline: Thursday, June 1st by 5:00 P.M. EST

This residency provides four choreographer/composer teams (eight artists total) with free rehearsal and workspace for a three-month period. Artists may start their residencies in October 2017 or January 2018.
The artist team will have the space to develop new work. Each team is required to give one free public program in coordination with JCAL.  Each artist will receive a stipend of $1,500, plus an additional stipend on completion of the public program.

Position:  We invite applications for the Arnhold Professorship of Dance Education.  We seek an outstanding, full-time faculty member with a record of important contributions to the field of Dance Education through artistic and scholarly accomplishment along with excellent teaching, leadership in dance education programming, and professional service.  We will recruit a colleague whose work bridges theory, research and practice to guide the development of a new doctoral program in Dance Education.  That program focuses on strengthening the field of Dance Education, deepening the knowledge base of pedagogies and teaching models in the field, creating strong links with other faculty and research in teacher education and related domains of professional practice, and contributing to policy development that will support dance education across the life span.  Rank and tenure or professor of practice status will be designated based on prior accomplishment and experience.

Review of applications will begin by March 1, 2017 and continue until the search is completed.  The appointment begins on September 1, 2017, with the possibility of an earlier visiting or consulting appointment to initiate planning and networking activities.

For their New York debut, the Scottish Ballet, now Scotland’s national dance company will feature a program of U.S. premieres: Motion of Displacement (2015) by Bryan Arias, and Ten Poems by Christopher Bruce. Arias’ Motion of Displacement “…is inspired by memories of his mother’s journey in her pursuit of love, and set to the music of John Adams and Johann Sebastian Bach,” while Bruce’s Ten Poems, set to various Dylan Thomas poems read by Richard Burton, “…focuses …on themes of humanity, loss, war, and peace.” notes the release. On this program of “Work Up” (3.2), Gibney Dance’s performance series which presents short works by dance and performance artists on a shared bill, effie bowen offers DANCE SPORT  “…an exorcism dance for the contemporary moment, pursuing exhaustion as an ecstatic state,” IV Castellanos and Amanda Hunt “…Explor[es] the continuous catching and falling of the performers’ bodies…” in SurForm i & ii, and  Veraalba Santa’s completes the program with Series of Non-Beginnings “…a solo piece and a long-distance duet between Santa and sound artist Joel Rodriguez,” notes the release.   Find out more here

Step Afrika! reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year and has performed on many stages in North & South America, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean.

Based in Washington, DC, the company has been featured on CNN, BET, PBS & NPR as well as numerous books, documentaries and articles that seek to explore the tradition of stepping. Step Afrika! completes an annual 50-city tour of American colleges and universities from Maine to Mississippi. The company is a model for the use of stepping in educational settings, espousing themes such as teamwork, academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding. Step Afrika! has earned Mayor’s Arts Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education (2005); Innovation in the Arts(2008); and Excellence in an Artistic Discipline (2012). The Company has performed for two Presidents at the White House and is featured prominently at the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African-American History and Culture.
The full-time position of Deputy Director provides managerial and fundraising support to all aspects of Step Afrika!’s operations and will play a pivotal role on the management team.
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Management – responsible for the following:
❑ Managing administrative staff members and consultants;
❑ Creating and overseeing management of annual budget, and reviewing financial statements;
❑ Managing all Human Resources for the Company;
❑ Handling other general administrative duties, as needed.
Development – responsible for the following:
❑ Developing and implementing annual individual giving programs;
❑ Conducting personal solicitation of major individual gifts;
❑ Coordinating annual VIP Gala and other special events;
❑ Manage communication and meetings with the Board of Directors;
❑ Representing the Company at donor events and DC political and social events.
Education and Experience Requirements include the following:
❑ Bachelor’s Degree
❑ 5-8 years’ experience in Nonprofit Arts Management
❑ Proven track record of soliciting individual gifts of up to $2,500.00
❑ Must have strong writing and editing skills
❑ Must have strong computer skills and Microsoft Office Suite experience
❑ Must have experience with fundraising software, such as Patron Manager
❑ Willingness to work evenings and weekends, as needed

The company’s 11 multi-ethnic and stunning dancers tap their unique talents to present high-energy and technically demanding dance that unleashes the powerful storytelling and imagery of its visionary creator. Carolyn Dorfman Dance is joined by the incomparable storyteller, narrator and librettist Charlotte Blake Alston in DANCE/STORIES – a work that bathes the senses and the soul – among other repertory.
