An NDA advisory board member since 2018, Pittman helped conceive of the residency project and will lead it into future iterations. “While we are honored to offer this residency program, we understand that the ideas around it are not new and not ours,” says Pittman. “As a Black artist working with a white-led organization, I want to make sure we credit the countless Black, femme scholars and activists who have called for the equitable payment of Black folks. I also want to call attention to how Black artists have historically shaped our nation’s imagination, language, and humanity so we want to use this residency as a way to value and amplify that tremendous work.” Read more in The New York Times! MEMBERSHIP | PROGRAMS | PRESS | DONATE IABD MEMBER NEWS Call for Dance Choreographer The Elon Dance Program of North Carolina seeks a dance choreographer to create a new solo dance work for the 2021 Spring Dance Concert. Applicants should have professional experience and it is preferred they have experience working with undergraduate students. The selected choreographer will create an original solo work (approximately 8-12 minutes) that will be learned by every Dance Performance and Choreography major (70+). The solo can follow any thematic concept the choreographer chooses but should be created in a way so that it can be performed on stage or in a variety of sites and environments. Due to uncertainty with future travel, the choreographer will teach the choreography to the students through a pre-recorded video. There will be one virtual master class and opportunities for coaching sessions via an online video conferencing platform so students and the choreographer can have meaningful interactions. Students will record their performance of the solo in various locations with guidance from the artistic director. The videos will be edited into a dance film and shared online. If the Spring Dance Concert takes place on stage, the choreographer will select 4 dancers to perform the solo individually during each of the 4 performance times. The artistic director will communicate with the choreographer regarding the master class, rehearsals, coaching sessions, costumes and other aspects of the production. Elon, located in Elon, North Carolina, is a dynamic private, co-educational, comprehensive institution that is a national model for actively engaging faculty and students in teaching and learning in a liberal arts based residential campus. "We're adapting to these crazy times, and...We're Still Making Art" DANCING IN THE PARKWe have been workshopping material for new movement studies through invited sessions in the park! Check out a phrase developed in Brooklyn's own Prospect Park with some members of our dance community: FROM THE FOLKS at THE PARK AVENUE ARMORY:
The next phase of the 100 Years | 100 Women initiative, a partnership with lead partner National Black Theatre and nine other New York City cultural institutions who together commissioned 100 artists and cultural creators to respond to the centennial of the 19th Amendment will debut on Tuesday, August 18. The projects, created by a multidisciplinary group that includes Carrie Mae Weems, Deborah Willis, Toshi Reagon, Zoë Buckman, Andrea Jenkins, and many more, have also been shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing, widespread racial justice movements, and the divisive election season. On Tuesday, August 18 at 2pm, the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s ratification, the Armory will host an online viewing party previewing the projects, publicly debuting an interactive digital portal that allows audiences to explore each commission, and premiering a short film by Shola Lynch documenting the inspirations and processes behind the participants’ contributions, including the ways in which the issues of the current moment have informed their work. 100 Years | 100 Women launched in February as part of the Armory’s annual “Culture in a Changing America” symposium, when the eleven partner institutions nominated 100 artists, activists, scholars, students, and community leaders to interrogate the complex legacy of women’s suffrage with new work to be presented as part of a gathering, showcase, and celebration scheduled to take place in the Armory’s Drill Hall this past spring. In lieu of the in-person celebration, the online viewing party--streaming on YouTube August 18 —will feature a sneak peek at some of the commissioned works, remarks by artists and partner organizations, and appearances by special guests including Maya Wiley, Susan Herman, Tantoo Cardinal, and more. In addition to Park Avenue Armory and National Black Theater, the group of commissioning partners includes Apollo Theater; The Juilliard School; La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club; The Laundromat Project; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of the Moving Image; National Sawdust; New York University (Department of Photography and Imaging, Tisch School of the Arts; Office of Global Inclusion, Diversity and Strategic Innovation; and Institute of African American Affairs & Center for Black Visual Culture); and Urban Bush Women.
