Picture
An outgrowth of the Body Politic intensive laboratory that piloted at Gibney Dance last summer, this interactive program features live dance and audience discussion that take on the questions: How can dance be a valuable part of social change? How is movement activism part of the frontier of dance? And why does society need the extraordinary skills of dancers more than ever right now?

Guest curated by choreographer and Body Politic founder Jill Sigman, the program includes new work by artist-activists affiliated with the Body Politic program: Joya Powell, Stacy Lynn Smith and Dani Cole, and an excerpt from Sigman’s This is where we are., which grew out of the movement process used in the Body Politic program. The choreographers presented here all work to forge connections between their somatic selves and social engagement in unique ways and offer a portrait of the evolving faces of art and activism.  They will be joined in discussion by human rights advocate Pardiss Kebriaei, Senior Staff Attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights

November 15-18

Choreographers Dalisa Pigram and Serge Aimé Coulibali, team up with Rachael Swain (Concept), Edwin Lee Mulligan (Poems) and Rachael Swain (Director) for Cut the Sky, presented by Marrugeku, Australia’s dance theater ensemble of Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists. Described as “A rock concert, a work of modern dance, and a plea for environmental action and the rights of Indigenous peoples, Cut the Sky addresses humanity’s frailty in the face of its own actions. In 70 minutes, Cut the Sky collides dance, video, poetry, and song. Propelled back and forward in time, Cut the Sky revisits conflict with mining companies, the destruction of fauna, and the relegation of the marginalized, while contemplating the gift of a human life and the life giving force of the sun. Butterflies swarm searching for water; dancers disintegrate into the light; a song is sung calling for rain. The performance in five acts is based on poems written and spoken by Nyikina/Walmajarri artist Edwin Lee Mulligan, and includes original songs from Ngaiire, Indigenous songs by the cast, and Nick Cave and Buffalo Springfield covers, sung by Ngaire Pigram," according to the release. Cultivating Arts Leaders of Color: The 2019 WOCA Leadership through Mentorship Program

APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN!

APPLY NOW

About The WOCA Leadership Through Mentorship Program
The Women of Color in the Arts (WOCA) Leadership Through Mentorship Program is an initiative which pairs emerging and mid-level administrators with more seasoned leaders with the explicit purpose of cultivating long-term professional investment and self-sustainability for women of color in the performing arts field. A first of its kind, it is significant to note that this program is designed for women of color, by women of color. This leadership training program is exclusively aimed at cultivating self-identified female leaders* of color, addressing their specific needs as often marginalized people in the field, while imparting tools to help participants foster a culture of equity in their respective work environments.

The expressed emphasis on mentorship and peer-to-peer learning supersedes many of the widely-held beliefs that formal academic learning and university-based professional training is the primary path to success and sustainability in the arts field. WOCA understands that learning happens in many forms, but it is often from within community that diverse voices and perspectives can emerge, engendering the most critical type of scholarship. WOCA also understands that the success of women in the workplace is largely predicated on the advocacy of women in the workplace so a focus on dismantling individual and institutional bias will also be addressed in the program. Most important, the Leadership through Mentorship Program is aimed at creating a sustainable community for arts leaders of color. While advanced scholarship will take place, the most critical intended outcome is cultivating a sense of community for both professional and personal development of the participant. At the heart of WOCA’s mission is continual community building in an effort to promote solidarity and wider visibility for women of color in the field.

*One of WOCA’s core philosophies is centered upon the premise that all women are leaders – no matter their station, title or position.

Emily Coates and Emmanuèle Phuon
Danspace Project
November 8 - 10

Bringing all-new work Coates and Phuon “…share aesthetic lineages through their work as members of Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project and Yvonne Rainer and Group. This shared evening makes public a conversation that we began more or less ten years ago, when we both began to create our own work," Coates and Phuon say. "Over the years, we have discussed many aspects of moving from performer to choreographer-from the logistical to the lofty. We have talked about how to turn aesthetic influences into useful tools, and the ways our shared lineages play out very differently in our work, partly due to the differences in our backgrounds." Whereas Phuon's early training lies in Cambodian classical dance, Coates began her career at New York City Ballet.  Coates with New York-based visual artist and MacArthur recipient, Josiah McElheny, will premiere A History of Light, and from Phuon, Bits & Pieces (Choreographic Donations) which “…looks backward and inward, narrating her personal journey through dance via Cambodia, France, New York, and Brussels with the help of 5 choreographers: Patricia Hoffbauer, David Thomson, Elisa Monte, Yvonne Rainer, and Vincent Dunoyer, notes the release. Artistic director/choreographer Brice Mousset/OUI DANSE
new hour long re-envisioning : WORK!
WORK!: a propulsive piece inspired by the testimonies of burned out players in the circus of the business world.
As success infiltrates and pollutes, WORK! shows the loss of humanity with grotesque elegance, bold movement and a theatrical sensibility. WORK! follows its characters journey through the circus of the business world’s competitions, compulsions, masquerades and the desperation to escape.  Combining irony, exaggeration and raw emotion, the choreography creates a world of reckless movement, technical bravura and the deceptive simplicity of pedestrian movement.
