Established by Battery Dance in 1982 as the Downtown Dance Festival, known today as Battery Dance Festival, it is New York City's longest-running free public dance festival. Returning for the 20th year Fringe will present nearly 200 emerging theatre and dance companies including Alia Kache/Kachal Dance (8/12-26) in Caricature of She which “…explore femininity through a whimsical fusion of dance and theatre,” and colectivodoszeta / carlos a. cruz velázquez (8/13 – 24) in auto/PHOBIA which “…looks to transform loneliness and at how the self-adapts to its ever-present specter,” notes the release. Described as Florida’s only professional ballet company, The Sarasota Ballet will present the New York City premiere of A Knight of the British Ballet honoring British dancer and choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton, features highlights from their “Sir Frederick Ashton Festival.” Also on the program is Façade, Valses nobles et sentimentales, and Tweedledum & Tweedledee, plus The Walk to The Paradise Garden, a tribute to Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet; Jazz Calendar (Friday’s Child), and Sinfonietta (2nd Movement). Under artistic director Robert Villanueva, the “multi-ethnic” organization BalaSole will present "MIXTUS," featuring works by Nika Antuanette, Davonna Batt, Vanessa Calderon, Meagan Cubides, Laurie Déziel, Dajuan Harris, Alexandria Johnson, Alexis Julian, Nuria Martin Fandos and Villanueva.
