Recognized for “championing a movement legacy rooted in the African-American experience,” two of the three works on the company’s triple bill are by Black choreographic voices. Ray Mercer’s This I Know For Sure, Rennie Harris’ Jacob’s Ladder and a restaging of Paul Taylor’s Esplanade, positioning DCDC as the first African American dance company to add this 1975 iconic work to its repertoire. Presented at part of "Edges of Ailey," Harrell remembers the African American choreographer, dancer, and anthropologist Katherine Dunham (1909–2006), who toured the world in the 1940s and ’50s and developed a technique based on dances from African and Afro-Caribbean cultures as well as Vodun, ballet, jazz, and modern dance.
