New Dance Group: Voices for Change, will feature four programs and will feature works made by artists of the legendary New Dance Group Studio, as produced and recorded by the Guild at The New Dance Group Gala Retrospective Performance on July 11, 1993. New Dance Group was a modern dance collective, inspired by the political movements which seized Manhattan in the early 1930s. In the fourth episode of my "Hangin'" series I'll be talking with Germaine Goodson, who has a career as dancer, teacher and choreographer. Hear stories about her experiences, which include; performing on Broadway in “Black and Blue” and “Play On, touring with dancer Deborah Mitchell, work in commercials, teaching dance and working with show business icons like, Cab Calloway. Enjoy the history!

Announcing the Open Call for Proposals for the first-ever Governors Island Winter Ice Sculpture Show!

On Saturday, February 26, 2022, 
The Trust for Governors Island and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council present the inaugural Governors Island Winter Ice Sculpture Show! 

We are excited to invite artists of all backgrounds and disciplines to submit an idea for an ice sculpture, to be completed in the two-hour public event! Selected artists or teams will receive an award of $2,000 to participate, and will be provided with tools, production materials, and will be matched with a professional ice carver from Okamoto Studio to complete the work on the day of the event. 

The deadline to send your proposals is Wednesday, February 9.

Ten projects will be selected by the jury and announced by
Friday, February 18, and winning submissions will be published online. Artists are encouraged to invite friends, fans, colleagues, and family to attend day of as additional fun prizes will be awarded to artists and artist teams on the day of the event through audience participation. Sculptures will remain on view on Governors Island until they melt.

For the American premiere of Doherty’s 
Hard to Be Soft, described by The Guardian as “…an homage to Doherty's hometown of Belfast [that captures]…the carapace of swagger and sass, rage and resilience built up by men and women in a place where the conflict seems intractable and horizons are limited by constrictions of class and religion,” featured is Sam Finnegan, John Scott, and the Sugar Army, a locally-cast group of teenagers.”  Find out more here

Created in collaboration with Creative Director Torya Beard, for Chasing Magic, Casel is joined by musical collaborators Grammy Award-winning composer and pianist Arturo O’Farrill, singer/songwriter Crystal Monee Hall, music director and composer Annastasia Victory, and percussionist Senfu Stoney. The  movement collaborators are: EVIDENCE Artistic Director Ronald K. Brown, Anthony Morigerato,  plus tap artists Naomi Funaki, Amanda Castro, and John Manzari, and filmed on The Joyce stage by tap dancer and filmmaker Kurt Csolak.  Find out more here

Call for Volunteers: The Dance/NYC 2022 Symposium Needs YOU

This spring, Dance/NYC will host its 2022 Symposium, Life cycles. Livelihoods. Legacies. The Symposium is a hybrid event, convening on a digital conference platform with three in-person offerings at Hunter College. Dance/NYC is currently seeking both in-person and remote volunteers to support the 2022 Symposium. Month-of, week-of, and day-of positions are available! 
​

In exchange for their commitment, all volunteers will receive complimentary access to the event, which includes: panel discussions, advising sessions with arts and legal consultants, training workshops, volunteer t-shirts, and more.

    I am a performer, historian, consultant and dance writer.
