Brooklyn Academy of Music, in partnership with the DeVos Institute of Arts Management, announces participants of the third cycle of BAM Professional Development Program

9/22/2014

Brooklyn, NY/Sep 18, 2014--The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) today announced the participants of the third cycle of the BAM Professional Development Program (BAM PDP), led by BAM and the DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland. The companies for this session represent mixed disciplines ranging from dance to theater to opera. Chosen by a BAM-convened panel, the organizations taking part in this session are Encompass New Opera Theatre, Satellite Collective, Summation Dance, and Treehouse Shakers. As with the previous sessions, the DeVos Institute extended invitations to a group of organizations to apply for the training portion of the BAM PDP—expanding the program’s reach beyond Brooklyn-based companies. These additional organizations taking part in the program are BalletNext, Beth Morrison Projects, Sō Percussion, and Zvi Dance.

Launched in 2012, the BAM PDP is a 9-month program that utilizes the strengths of both institutions to provide professional development training and deeply discounted theater and rehearsal studio rental to an annual selection of qualifying Brooklyn non-profit arts organizations. Through the program, supported by Brooklyn Community Foundation, BAM and the DeVos Institute strive to help arts organizations expand their skill base, increase their institutional capacity, and build necessary foundations for their long-term success. The latest cycle of the program began this month and culminates with each Brooklyn-based company presenting a self-funded production in the BAM Fisher Fishman Space within the year following the training portion.

The second component of the program is the DeVos Institute’s Performers in Transition Arts Management Training Program designed to train professional performing artists who have completed or are nearing the end of their professional career to transition into arts management roles. The program offers professional artists in New York City an opportunity to take part in the arts management training offered by the BAM PDP, coupled with the applied experience of working alongside one of the program’s organizations as it mounts a production. From backgrounds as diverse as the cycle’s companies, the Performers in Transition (and their performance affiliations) are Tsarra Bequette (MOMIX, Project Flux, Ballet Idaho), Tadej Brdnik (Martha Graham Dance Company), Cynthia Dragoni (Dragoni Dance Institute and Company), Elise Drew (José Limón Dance Foundation), Janice Hall (Fort Worth Opera, NYCO, Santa Fe Festival, Washington National Opera), Steve Holloway (CELT Productions, Riverdance, Broadway tours), Curt Olds (Hawaii Opera Theatre, Nashville Opera, Arizonza Opera, Broadway), Damian Smith (San Francisco Ballet), Pablo Francisco Ruvalcaba (José Limón Dance Foundation), and Susie Williams (Lisa’s Bright Ideas, Aerial Salon, Varsity Interpretive Dance Squad, Built for Collapse).

THE ANDREW W. MELLON FOUNDATION GRANTS $750,000 TO GIBNEY DANCE IN SUPPORT OF DANCE IN PROCESS RESIDENCY PROGRAM

RESIDENCIES COMBINE THE RESOURCES OF GIBNEY DANCE’S CHOREOGRAPHIC CENTER AT 890 BROADWAY AND PERFORMING ARTS CENTER AT 280 BROADWAY IN THE SERVICE OF DEVELOPING NEW WORK BY MID-CAREER ARTISTS

New York, NY, September 22, 2014--Gibney Dance today announces a $750,000 gift from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in support of its Dance in Process (DiP) creative residency program for mid-career artists. As the inaugural funder of the program, Mellon’s support enables significant expansion of the DiP model—which was developed over a two-year pilot period—to fund 30 three-week residencies for 30 artists over three years at the Gibney Dance Choreographic Center at 890 Broadway.

Gibney Dance’s DiP program is a comprehensive New York City-based creative residency for mid-career artists who are in the “mid-stage” of developing new work. The program focuses on work that has progressed beyond initial research; developing work that requires technical support in a theater or production laboratory setting; and work that requires uninterrupted space and support in which to test new ideas and directions. DiP provides a concentrated period of residency time with continuous access to studio and rehearsal space, a significant stipend, and technical and administrative resources available at both 890 Broadway and the Gibney Dance Performing Arts Center at 280 Broadway.

The DiP program is based in the historic 890 Broadway building where Gibney Dance has, over the last three years, established subsidized rehearsal space and an array of artist services for the dance community. This generous investment by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation enables Gibney Dance to deepen its support to artists and establish 890 as a Choreographic Center—the only one of its kind in New York City.

The expansion of DiP is a component of Gibney Dance's $10M Campaign for 280 Broadway: Making Space for Culture, which will fund renovations within 280 Broadway as well as new and expanded artistic and community programs. The newly transformed 280 Broadway will be a multi-purpose center—a preeminent training ground, a tripartite performance complex, an affordable workspace hub, and a springboard for social action. These new resources will allow Gibney Dance to both expand and deepen its existing programs. Artists will benefit from interactions between Gibney Dance’s initiatives for performance, dance training, professional development, rehearsal space, creative residencies, and artistic process—holistically supporting their entire journey from studio to stage. The expanded opportunities and resources at 280 Broadway—including the soon-to-be-opened Learning & Leadership Studio and Community Action Hub—will enable Gibney Dance to further develop synergies between all its endeavors, contributing to the dynamism of the entire organization.

Fall For Dance Festival @ The Delacorte Theater – Take Two

9/18/2014

PictureHubbard Street Dance Chicago Photo: Tammy Shell
For year two, the determined duo Arlene Schuler (President & CEO at City Center) and Oskar Eustis (Artistic Director at The Public Theater at Astor Place) joined forces to kick off the annual "Fall For Dance Festival,” free and outdoors at Central Park's Delacorte Theater. Their reason, Eustis put it simply, “…culture belongs to everyone.”  Hubbard Street Dance Chicago opened with Nacho Duato's Gnawa (2005) highlighted by the petite Kellie Epperheimer and partner Jesse Bechard's recurring duet.  Bechard managed to manipulate Epperheimer in what seemed comfortable contortions, framed by an ensemble of fine dancers.  At different intervals, one, two, three or more from the group grabbed attention in accurately timed and sculpturally specific offerings, charging Duato's sometimes culturally-shaped movement or his sharp lines.  William Forsythe's whimsical Herman Schmerman Pas De Deux (1992) performed by Maria Kowroski and Amar Ramasar of New York City Ballet, which began with requisite quirky and non-linear Forsythe shapes (wrists flung, hips off kilter and lots of inward rotation), was next.  Around mid-way, this non-classical mixer took yet another turn when Kowroski left then returned in a bright yellow mini skirt, Ramasar did the same.  Just enough hamming it up matched their lovely dancing.  Embracing the backdrop of trees and a castle, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company with live music from The Orion String Quartet followed with the timeless D-Man in the Waters (Part 1) (1989). The Company looked especially joyous sliding, gliding and traversing the wide open space.  Sadly, the excitement for Lil Buck closing the evening with Bend In The Road: New Orleans by Buck, Damian Woetzel and Matthew Neenan, was squashed because he sustained an injury to his ankle.  Certainly not a replacement, Ron “Prime Tyme” Myles stepped up and within 48 hours, filled in for Lil Buck.  This was the beginning of a work by Buck, Woetzel et. al, which included performers from BalletX and a cameo from Tyler Peck and her husband Robert Fairchild, courtesy of New York City Ballet.

The annual "Fall For Dance Festival" runs October 8 - 19 at City Center.  Find out more here
