Danspace Project
March 28 - 30
As part of Whitson’s mixing of postmodern and African Diasporic performance practices, and through a keen look at the intersection of gender, sexuality, race, and spirituality, Whitson premieres Oba Qween Baba King Baba, "...engaging spiritual multiplicity and the role of Queerness in the Divine. The work’s title is based on the Yorùbá word “Oba,” which is a genderless term that has come to be known as a king. Through movement, poetry, jazz, textile, and video art, Oba Qween Baba King Baba uncovers architectures of the body, space, and sexuality to interrogate power and ways masculinity influences our understanding of histories of religion. Inspired by [Whitson's] own experiences as a child of a preacher, Oba Qween Baba King Baba ritualizes an interrogation into dynamics between constructs of father, masculinities, and power,” writes Whitson. “As a practitioner of the Yorùbá Òrìsà tradition, I draw from the performance of gender in ritual and ceremony, where Òrìsà exist as energies, not necessarily genders despite their colloquial references,” according to the release. Danspace Project will host a free preview showing, Saturday, March 23 at 7pm for QTPOC (Queer and Trans People of Color) identified people. Please write to [email protected] to RSVP.
