Danspace Project
March
28 - 30

As part of Whitson’s mixing of postmodern and African Diasporic performance practices, and through a keen look at the intersection of gender, sexuality, race, and spirituality, Whitson premieres Oba Qween Baba King Baba, "...engaging spiritual multiplicity and the role of Queerness in the Divine. The work’s title is based on the Yorùbá word “Oba,” which is a genderless term that has come to be known as a king. Through movement, poetry, jazz, textile, and video art, Oba Qween Baba King Baba uncovers architectures of the body, space, and sexuality to interrogate power and ways masculinity influences our understanding of histories of religion. Inspired by [Whitson's] own experiences as a child of a preacher, Oba Qween Baba King Baba ritualizes an interrogation into dynamics between constructs of father, masculinities, and power,” writes Whitson. “As a practitioner of the Yorùbá Òrìsà tradition, I draw from the performance of gender in ritual and ceremony, where Òrìsà exist as energies, not necessarily genders despite their colloquial references,” according to the release.  Danspace Project will host a free preview showing, Saturday, March 23 at 7pm for QTPOC (Queer and Trans People of Color) identified people. Please write to lydia@danspaceproject.org to RSVP.  Find out more here

FROM Jan Hanvik:

Dear Dance Enthusiast,

Tlacopac International Artist Residency opened in Mexico City January 29.  Only 6% of artist residencies in the world invite performing artists, because performing arts residencies require a large rehearsal space and many bedrooms.  Tlacopac has a large wood-floored rehearsal space, 5 bedrooms that can accommodate 8 - 12 dance students or dance company members, and 2 - 3 professors or choreographers and assistants, as well as changing rooms, a steam room and sauna, and rooftops, gardens, patios, and living and sleeping spaces that are spacious and comfortable, in a home in a quiet safe neighborhood in southern Mexico City that attracted many of the most important figures in Mexican and Mexican-American art history.  Details and application form at https://crossingbridges.nyc/residencia-artistica-tlacopac-tlacopac-artist-residency/

Founder Jan Hanvik is a former modern dancer with a BFA City College of the City University of New York, and MA from New York University Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. https://www.linkedin.com/in/jan-hanvik-a5ba1a25/  Dance Director Mark DeGarmo has a BFA from the Juilliard School and PhD from Union Institute and University. http://markdegarmodance.org/our-mission/  Both have enormous experience in US-Mexico dance exchange and guarantee to dance visitors to Tlacopac an immersive experience in Mexico's rich world of traditional, indigenous, contemporary, classical, AfroMexican, and other forms of dance, as well as a quiet supportive environment in which to develop the dance project of their choosing.  Please visit the link above to research or to apply, and please send your inquiries to Jan Hanvik.

In 2019, our mission in life is "More intercultural exchange!  More intercultural exchange!  More intercultural exchange!"

466 Grand Street
New York, NY 10002

March 22 @ 6:30pm
March 23 @ 3 & 6pm
March 24 @ 3pm

Adaku’s Revolt is an interdisciplinary performance about one young black girl who revolts against imposed standards of beauty: a revolt against those who normalize the pain that must be endured, against the inevitable physical scarring that results from an assault of chemical straighteners and iron hot combs. Her heroism strikes a blow against those that would have her believe that her natural hair should be a source of humiliation, a triumph against the insidious self-loathing that attempts to seed itself in her most vulnerable moments.
