February ALLways: Intro to Accessibility Thinking & Practice

When: February 22, 2024 • 1-4pm ET/10am-1pm PT
Where: Online!
Who: This session is led by Laurel Lawson and is customized specifically for organizations, presenters, and teams who want to begin to implement accessible practices in their culture. It is best suited for arts workers with new experience with disability/accessibility. What: Learn the fundamentals, such as booking access workers, accessible communications, and anti-bias practices, that create equitable accessibility. Develop strategies to implement these learnings within your internal organization and your external events. Identify how these principles can continue to root into disability culture and expertise.

Next Week! DESCENT: Online & In-Depth

We are excited to host DESCENT: Online & In-Depth, a Kinetic Light produced online event featuring an intimate conversation between our founding artists followed by screenings of DESCENT.

Thursday, October 26 7:30pm ET / 4:30pm PT

Saturday, October 28 1pm ET / 10am PT

The first hour will be a pre-recorded, podcast style conversation between the artists; Alice Sheppard, Michael Maag and Laurel Lawson will tune into the event live via chat so you can engage with them in real time during their recorded conversation. After a short break, we’ll roll into screenings of DESCENT, filmed in 2018 at EMPAC, with freshly revamped accessibility.

Access: Open captions, multiple tracks of audio description, musical ASL interpretation with a DI/HI team, call line, and transcripts will be available.  Event playback will be available to ticket holders for 48 hrs. For even more access details, click here.

We hope you will join us! Questions? Email [email protected]

Applications Open - Rennie Harris University ~ Street Dance Certification Program

Apply for the first ever Hip Hop and Street Dance Certificate Program. The Certificate program is dynamic, rigorous and uniquely designed to prepare students to advance the field of dance; nurturing the next generation of hip hop scholars.

Rennie Harris has been developing the Street Dance Teacher Certification Program for the last 40 years. Having spent the last 10 years offering courses in academia, Harris has developed a curriculum that functions within the academic institution while establishing a strong foundation for all Street Dance forms, also referred to as “styles.” The program goes beyond teaching dance steps, by fostering technically proficient teachers who are cultural ambassadors of the rich history and cultural lineage of the forms.

As Hip-hop and Street Dance alike become global phenomena, it is imperative to create a training program that establishes a strong foundation in technique, musicality, improvisation, and the historical context that informs the genre. The program will serve as a model for future teacher training programs within the field of Street Dance.

Universities and colleges are encouraged to invest in their students' participation in this program, and also sharing this information directly with students within dance programs respectfully. Spring applications opened October 1st and the deadline to apply is December 15th. For more information please feel free to visit RennieHarrisUniversity.org.
