Former dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company, Orihara will premiere the second incarnation of her multi-media work, evening-length solo work, In the Box 2 (ITB2)  “… Using cutting edge animations and projections from Japan…[and]…juxtaposing three-dimensional sounds and images with the flesh and bones of a dancer and her moving shadow.” "ITB2 follows the 2015 premiere of ITB which explored the paradox of “Where Technology Meets the Body” inspired by Schrödinger‘s cat (quantum mechanics).  ITB2 picks up where its predecessor left off and opens the book of our lives in a paradoxical nature. [Finally] ITB2 explores human nature by mixing the human body with technology,” explains Orihara.  Find out more here

Kyle Abraham’s dance company, Abraham.in.Motion closes the Lumberyard in the City festival - Lumberyard Contemporary Performing Arts (formerly American Dance Institute) with the premiere of DEAREST HOME “…an interactive dance work developed in a multi-year process, focused on Loving and Longing and Loss,” according to the release.   Find out more here

David Michalek/Yvonne Rainer
Danspace Project
June 23 – July 1
The film, “SlowDancing/TrioA” by artist Michalek, in collaboration with choreographer, Rainer, “… seeks to create an unusual motion picture record of Rainer's iconic dance-work, Trio A, which she created in 1966,” notes the release.  There is a cast of 46 dancers includes original dancers Pat Catterson, Emily Coates, Stephen Petronio, Richard Move, David Thomson, Wendy Whelan and younger generations of dancers, many of whom are students of the original dancers. "   This video installation will be open to the public  and admission is free. RSVP is recommended.  Find out more here

The Joyce Theater

After more than a decade, Moses Pendleton’s Momix dance company returns with the Opus Cactus program in two Acts, described as “…a celebration of the landscape of the American Suthwest, utilizing Pendleton’s signature illusionistic style,” according to the release.  Find out more here

Choreographer and dancer  Oberfelder, who created 4Chambers, “…a dance about the human heart,” will premiere The Brain Piece, to celebrate the brain’s “…neuroplasticity, [and] the ability to form connections,” notes the release.  Find out more here

University Settlement

The Performance Project will present Ai Dance Theater’s Them, “…a multi-media dance performance conceived and directed by Janet Aisawa featuring dances with Yuko Takebe’s film, "Shadows of Hiroshima," according to the release.  Find out more here

Gibney Dance Company Seeks Performers for Invited Auditions
Apply now to be considered for invited auditions to be scheduled between July 17 and August 5! Full-time contracts will begin September 2017.
Gibney Dance Company’s full-time Artistic Associates embrace a broad spectrum of activities—in the studio, on stage, within our organization, and throughout the community.

Our Artistic Associates:
  • Perform the work of Artistic Director Gina Gibney and renowned guest choreographers.
  • Facilitate hundreds of movement workshops each year for survivors of intimate partner violence.
  • Offer healthy relationship assemblies to high school students throughout the city through our Hands are for Holding program.
  • Develop programming addressing pressing issues in the dance field, such as cultivating long-term diversity, connecting artists around the globe, and empowering dancers with financial literacy training.
Gibney Dance prioritizes our resident company by offering year-round contracts, health insurance, and paid vacation.

NEWS: Announcing Urban Bush Women's Choreographic Center Fellowship Awardees

The UBW Choreographic Center is a ten-year initiative and investment in the development of women choreographers of the African Diaspora, whose voices are not as prominent in the national arts ecology as they should be. The UBW Fellowship Program is one component of the evolving UBW Choreographic Center. Through a nationwide vetting, these five artists were identified as having distinctive artistic voices and compelling points of view addressing particular issues of cultural narrative and history.

Please join Dance/NYC for a series of conversations about integrated and disability dance artistry. Organized around upcoming New York City metropolitan area performance activity at the nexus of disability and dance, the series will feature leading artists working at that nexus in conversation with their presenters. The goals of the series are to drive awareness and interest in dance made by and with disabled artists, capture and share lessons learned by featured artists, and generate dialogue and partnerships among attendees.

Featured artists are grantees of Dance/NYC’s Disability. Dance. Artistry. Fund, created to advance dance making by and with disabled artists. Dance/NYC will launch its series on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 with a conversation with Heidi Latsky Dance, 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., followed by a master class, 8:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, moderated by Kevin Gotkin, Co-Founder of The Disability/Arts/NYC Task Force, and spotlighting choreographer Heidi Latsky and representatives of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts: Jill Sternheimer, Director of Public Programming; Daniel Soto, Associate Producer of Public Programming; Miranda Appelbaum, Assistant Director of Accessibility and Guest Services; and Jordana Phokompe, Director of the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center.

    I am a performer, historian, consultant and dance writer.
