AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE ANNOUNCED
THE ABT WOMEN’S MOVEMENT
MULTI-YEAR INITIATIVE TO SUPPORT THE CREATION OF NEW WORK

BY FEMALE CHOREOGRAPHERS
ABT WOMEN’S MOVEMENT GALA TO OPEN FALL 2018 SEASON AT
THE DAVID H. KOCH THEATRE ON OCTOBER 17

American Ballet Theatre announced the formation of the ABT Women’s Movement, a multi-year initiative to support the creation, exploration and staging of new works by female choreographers for ABT and the ABT Studio Company. The initiative was announced today by ABT Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie.
The ABT Women’s Movement will support at least three female choreographers each season to create new works for American Ballet Theatre. In most years, one work will be designated for ABT’s main company, one for the ABT Studio Company and one will be a work-in-process workshop for ABT or Studio Company dancers. Each choreographer will work with her respective group of dancers for a two-to-five week period, receiving guidance and feedback from ABT’s artistic staff.
The opening night Gala performance of American Ballet Theatre’s 2018 Fall season will celebrate the ABT Women’s Movement with an evening devoted to works by female choreographers. The Gala program on October 17 will include a new work by tap dancer and choreographer Michelle Dorrance, Le Jeune by New York City Ballet principal dancer Lauren Lovette, created in 2017 and performed by the ABT Studio Company, and In the Upper Room by Twyla Tharp. The 2018 Fall season will also feature a new work by choreographer Jessica Lang.

The ABT Studio Company will premiere a new work by choreographer Claudia Schreier for its 2018-2019 season performances, and the Studio Company’s annual residency with Duke University, beginning January 2019, will include a new work by New York-based choreographer Stefanie Batten Bland.

The ABT Women’s Movement took shape in 2016 as the Women Choreographers Initiative, having supported the ABT World Premiere of The Gift by Jessica Lang and the return of Lang’s Her Notes during the Company’s 2017 Fall season. The Initiative also funded new works for the ABT Studio Company by Lovette and former San Francisco Ballet soloist Dana Genshaft. In addition, choreographer Pam Tanowitz was in residency with ABT last November on a work-in-process. The workshop explored and developed movement phrases and concepts and culminated in an informal studio showing.

“The ABT Women’s Movement takes inspiration from the groundbreaking female choreographers who have left a lasting impact on ABT’s legacy, including Agnes de Mille and Twyla Tharp,” said McKenzie. “This Fall, we are pleased to welcome Michelle Dorrance, who will create her first work for ABT, and Jessica Lang, in her third work for the Company.” “The artistic staff at American Ballet Theatre has embraced and encouraged my work for nearly 20 years,” said Lang. “I am proud to be a part of this initiative. If we can ignite all imaginations to find creative potential, we can move from possible to probable that the future will have equality and be rich with inventive ideas and engaging art.”

Picture
(Bronx, NY)  BAAD! – The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance announced that summer 2018 registration has opened for the AATT Academy, a community-based, accessible athletic dance education program for 6-9 year old boys and girls.  The Academy’s diverse and professional faculty provides progressive, non-competitive, gender neutral, quality instruction from traditional dance to athletics including ballet, gymnastics, capoeira, West African dance, Hip Hop, contemporary dance, and more. The program will run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9am-2pm, from Tuesday, July 17 to Thursday August 16, 2018.  BAAD! is located in a neo gothic style building at 2474 Westchester Avenue. To register a child or further information about the AATT Academy, contact Dance Education Coordinator Cynthia Paniagua at 718-918-2110, cynthia@baadbronx.org or visit www.BAADBronx.org.

The program offers Bronx children a unique opportunity to receive high quality dance instruction from masters in the field, and a fully inclusive, nurturing environment that uses multi-media to provide an immersive experience.  At the culmination of the program, the children demonstrate various dance techniques in a public showing on Thursday, July 16 at 2pm.

Acclaimed Bronx Choreographer, Arthur Avilés, inaugurated the AATT Academy in 2006 and held classes and workshops in elementary schools and for incarcerated teenage girls.  The program was redesigned and developed as an in-house program for BAAD! in 2016. The AATT Academy operates as a 5-week dance intensive during the summer and as an afterschool program in the fall and spring.
BAAD! has been a stakeholder in the Bronx for 19 years, has become a beacon for dance and has earned national recognition for its innovative dance and arts programming.

The AATT Academy receives generous support from the SHS Foundation and this program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

WORKSHOP: "The Generative Dancer: The Generative Dancer: UBW Choreographic and Performance Lab

5/30/2018

Picture
Dream / Research / Move / Create / Build / Delve Deeper / Repeat - UBW Generative Dancer Choreographic & Performance Lab

This 3-day workshop will be taught by 2017 Bessie Lifetime Achievement in Dance Award recipient and UBW Founder/Visioning Partner, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar.

The participants will engage in a process-based approach to UBW’s art-making. The process-based investigations are informed by who is in the room and involves iterative cycles of rigorous embodied research informed by radical Black experimentation in the fields of culture, politics, identity and history.

Each day will be structured with:
  • Warm up/class
  • Structured improvisation/investigation/solo practice - how we “research” our physicality through prompts and ideas
  • Research - Each participant is asked to bring in ideas they are researching or interested in developing. They will use their iPhones, tablets or computers to explore further how to deepen the research and move it into “embodiment”
  • Structural Concepts/Finding Form - we will explore different structural approaches to choreographic development

ChoreoLaB June 18 - 29, 2018 | Ages 18+

An immersive, career-building program that places rising professional dancers in an intimate studio experience with distinguished choreographers and seasoned artistic staff.Artists in today's dance world must be more than just technicians. Beyond demonstrating skilled technique, dancers are frequently expected to contribute thoughtfully to a choreographic process, transition seamlessly between varied styles of repertoire, and possess strong partnering ability. • Learn excerpts of Ballet Hispánico's repertory from Company dancers and artistic staff
  • Attend forums, networking events and Q&A sessions with artists in the field
  • Audition in an open call for Ballet Hispánico's second company BHdos
