FROM THE FOLKS AT JESSICA LANG DANCE:

Jessica Lang Dance (JLD) and Selby Artists Management (SAM) announce today that after the incredible success of the last seven years, Jessica Lang Dance has decided to close on April 30, 2019, which is the end of its 19-city, 2018-19 season. Ms. Lang will continue her creative work as a choreographer, working with companies around the world.

JLD has experienced tremendous success with a repertoire of 25 dances choreographed by Artistic Director and Founder Jessica Lang. JLD has performed for audiences nationally and internationally in over 75 cities, 35 states, and 7 different countries and the creativity will continue through this season: Late in the Fall of 2018 JLD will perform a world premiere of another dance by Lang at the Zellerbach Theatre in Philadelphia. Commenting on the closure, Lang stated: "It has been an honor and deeply rewarding for me to establish a company and to lead its phenomenal growth—in creativity, quality and rigorous touring—for the past seven years. I'm profoundly grateful to our dedicated dancers, board members, staff, donors, presenters, audiences and our agent, Margaret Selby and Selby Artists Mgmt., who made JLD a success."

The dance company's Board of Trustees embraces the closure after what has been an extraordinary run. "It has been a moving and inspirational experience for the Board to be involved with supporting Jessica's choreography and to help her create a company of wonderful dancers. We know she will continue to be successful in sharing her art and vision around the world and we wish her success for the future," remarked JLD Board Chair Geoff Fallon.

Calpulli Mexican Dance Company
Thalia Spanish Theatre
November 30 – December 16

Artistic Director Alberto Lopez Herrera and Co-Founder Juan Castaño presents “Navidad: A Mexican-American Christmas” exploring the beautiful holiday traditions of Mexico and the United States through music and dance. The traditions are experienced by a young person of Mexican immigrant parents growing up in New York City. From Aztec-inspired dance to Christmas carols, the youngster tries to bring their two worlds together. In a dream, they imagine the fusion of Mariachi music with Tchaikovsky, folk dance with ballet, and the wonderment of their two cultures. But a tempting character preaches the separation of these customs, and the youngster must choose. The company of 16 dancers and core of musicians led by Calpulli’s Music Director George Saenz bring to life timeless traditions and a world of holiday fantasy. The entirely new program tells a story with commissioned works by Mexican and Mexican-American guest choreographers with new musical arrangements and original works," notes the release. “A Christmas Carol in Harlem”
Aaron Davis Hall
November 27 – December 8

"Set in present-day Harlem, this holiday treasure is dramatized with Classical Theater of Harlem’s signature style of infusing classic works with an uptown flair. A Christmas Carol in Harlem places Ebenezer Scrooge as a real estate mogul who has made his fortune at the expense of others. Scrooge foregoes using his wealth to affect positive change within his Harlem community and instead lives a life of miserly solitude. That is, until three unexpected visitors arrive on Christmas Eve to show him that the value of family and the impact of cooperation will lead to a healthy, thriving and prosperous community," according to the release.  Find out more here

OPPORTUNITY: Come Dance With Me! New Project for Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company - from Germaul Barnes

11/23/2018

FROM GERMAUL BARNES:

Dear Fellow Movers and Shakers,

I’m reaching out about an upcoming opportunity to dance with me! If this particular opportunity doesn’t fit your life or interests, please feel free to pass it along to anyone who may be interested.
As many of you already know, my multifaceted work takes me all over the country and the world teaching, choreographing, speaking, staging works, designing, and creating. As I look to a fresh New Year, I aim to share my travels and work more often, so you know what I’m up to and so we can dream up more opportunities for collaboration, sharing, and growth.

As a former member of Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company I am lucky enough to continue my work with Bill through re-staging of iconic works and, occasionally, the creation of new work. I am currently seeking dancers who identify as men of color to join me as one of the community members that I will bring in to work on the project with me and the Company. We are seeking dancers ages 16-70. For your participation with this project in January, we can offer you an honorarium of $100.

PLEASE NOTE: if you cannot participate in this work but would be interested in future opportunities to dance together, please reach out. I am always interested in creating space for men of color to move, create, and communicate, together.

The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company is creating a new work, titled Deep Blue Sea which will premiere in Spring 2020 in New York City.  Deep Blue Sea will explore the relationship of loneliness as it pertains to, or contrasts to group identity. The work will be divided into three sections: a solo for Bill T. Jones which evolves over time into an ensemble of ten performers (Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company) that further expands into a community of one hundred people.”

Below, please find the rehearsal and showing dates. If you’re interested, please email me at [email protected]  with your Name, Contact Info, Age, CV, and confirmation that you can attend all required rehearsals. For your convenience here is a Google Form linkhttps://goo.gl/forms/F2wh44rVB1QaA3rC3  or send information directly to my email above. Deadline to confirm your participation is November 28th by 5pm.
