Dance During COVID -19

7/29/2020

A message from Kyle Abraham and Taylor Stanley
When we first worked together on “The Runaway” for NYCB in 2018, an instant bond was created. There was a synergy of shared experiences and shared narratives. And although our pathways and audiences may differ, we share a united sense of a weighted experience that holds our history and our art form alike.
This collaboration aims to celebrate our queerness and our color in a way that hopefully stresses its importance, its fragility, and its strength. We dance, and create dances for those who have yet to see themselves on a stage. We dance, and create dances for our community and beyond. We dance, and create dances to nourish our souls. We make dances to reflect, to ask, to heal.
We want to honor the lives of those who we have lost due to the color of their skin or their identity. May they remain close to our hearts and at the forefront of our actions as we continue to create, reflect, and dance. For the both of us, we commemorate our history….in PRIDE.
Love,
Kyle Abraham and Taylor Stanley

Monica L. Williams Joins 651 ARTS

651 ARTS announces a major step forward to ensure that the institution will thrive in a post-pandemic arts and culture space with the appointment of Monica L. Williams in the new role of Director of Programs and Chief Curator.

"It is an incredible honor to now be part of continuing 651’s long and rich legacy of growing Black arts and Black artists, which has always been the heartbeat of the institution,” Ms. Williams says. “Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to amplifying the voices and perspectives of those across the African Diaspora. It is now more important than ever before to meet the challenges of the current moment and sustain and grow institutions like 651 ARTS that are telling our stories. I look forward to working to create opportunities for many in the Diasporic arts, both locally in the wonderful borough of Brooklyn as well as abroad.”

Our dance world was pummeled by COVID-19 and Black dance artists are finding ways to talk about life during this time.  Our world was further turned upside down after horrible events ensued nationally and globally, bringing attention, yet again, to the need for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Black dance artists have not been quiet since.  Black dance artists have been doing the work.  Black dance artists continue to make work.  To stay involved, we will hold weekly impromptu discussions and tell stories - “Black Dance Stories."
This is one action - we will stay involved.

IABD'S "THE BLACK REPORT"

7/22/2020

DOWNLOAD THE BLACK REPORT TODAY!!
THE BLACK REPORT documents the organizational and financial health of a representative sample of thirty Black-led dance companies across the United States. This body of work was made possible by each of those organizations opening their doors to IABD, The Nonprofit Finance Fund and Baraka Sele (Independent Arts Consultant), and providing access to their financial and organizational data. This was birthed by the stories overheard, the people encountered who, on a day-to-day basis, strive to keep their arts organizations alive.

THE BLACK REPORT IS A CALL TO ACTION! This is our response and directive to move beyond the comfortable conversations, the empathy and understanding, the "woe is me and wringing of the hands" and be moved into the uncomfortable zone.

The disparities that we know exist between Arts Organizations of Color and those White-led mainstream large budget companies in dance is confirmed by the data that was collected from thirty Black-led dance companies across the nation. IABD desires to set the record straight about the state of our companies in this field and how the deeply rooted racial and economic divide in the field of dance exists and must be addressed. We can no longer remain on the sidelines and be silenced by a system that wasn't made for us to prosper.

Thank you for your interest in our work. We know that you will use this as a resource.

Join us in our release by sharing this link (iabdassociation.org/theblackreport) with your networks, your Board, donors, funders, and staff.

Let's correct the narrative.
