CRIA BAM March 29—April 2 For the US premiere and the BAM debut, choreographer Alice Ripoll and her company Cia Suave brings CRIA. "CRIA is the embodiment of youth. Taking the movement vocabularies of dancinha, a hot mix of funk, samba, and breakdance, and passinho, the life force of favela culture, choreographer Alice Ripoll relocates the wild exuberance of adolescence through dance. Driven by the social injustice in Brazil, the piece alternates between intense states of exultation and celebration, with the highly charged group absorbing and reconstructing the music’s rapid and jerky rhythm. Ripoll and the 10-member group Suave—an all-Black company of cis and trans performers from Rio de Janeiro, each brings their own narrative, dance history, and physicality to the stage—as CRIA makes its US debut," according to the release. March 28th & 29th marked the 50th anniversary of the premiere concert of SOUNDS IN MOTION. This is the company I founded and directed from 1972 through 1988 followed by numerous projects, initiatives, companies and more, by me and the many individuals who were part of the world of SOUNDS IN MOTION. The initial concert took place at the Cubiculo Theatre on 51st between 8th and 9th Avenues in New York City. I was 25. Great support for the concert came from Clark Center director, Louise Roberts. I shared the concert with choreographer, Raymond Clay. The dancers that day who became key to the future development of SOUNDS IN MOTION were William (Bill) Donald, Bernadine Jennings and Dorian Williams-Byrd. Also performing with us were five musicians and dancers Paul Gray, Mercy Hinton, Aramide Scmi, and Yolanda Raven. Thank you to all of the artists, administrators, family members, friends, fellow Harlem arts institutions, scholars, writers, dance/music/theatre circles, presenters, mentors, funding organizations and every one of you who have been and continue to be part of this journey. With love and gratitude, Dianne McIntyre Read more about Dianne McIntyre here Black Dance Stories Live ~ April 1 & April 2 @ Mark Morris Dance Center!
