Lloyd’s new evening-length work, Blackbare in the Basement, promises to “…transform Danspace’s sanctuary inside St. Mark’s Church into a site of fantasy and textural collage. Lloyd returns to presenting work in a theater for the first time since the pandemic, organizing his desires around choreographic and visual design, storytelling, philosophy, and various contemporary performance aesthetics.”  For Blackbare in the Basement, “Lloyd divides an eight person ensemble into an amalgamation of solos, duets, and trios that are threaded together to produce experiences of calculated entropy and disorientation via an intuitive shifting of language and logic,” according to the release.  Lloyd further explains, “Within the nuances of the movement vocabulary, there is an intuitive shifting of language and logic between the groupings which allows for experiences of otherworldliness.” Find out more here

Harlem Stage announces the 2023 cohort for its WaterWorks Emerging Artists program: interdisciplinary performing artist and painter Shantelle Courvoisier Jackson; singer/songwriter Hannah Lemmons; choreographer and dancer Bobby Morgan; interdisciplinary artist, composer, and pianist Mary Prescott; and trumpeter and composer Kalí Rodríguez-Peña. Part of Harlem Stage’s signature commissioning program, WaterWorks, the Emerging Artists program is designed to support early-career artists of color, and those growing new aspects of their artistic practice.

WaterWorks encourages artists to continue to push boundaries, expanding their chosen art forms and creative instincts. The program offers artists a spot among a multidisciplinary cohort, commissioning support, mentorship, critical feedback, and professional development opportunities. Throughout the year-long program, artists will develop an original performance piece, to be presented as part of a work-in-progress showcase, at the Harlem Stage Gatehouse in December 2023.

The Joyce Theater Foundation Announces Plan to Purchase Extraordinary 58,000 Square-Foot Century-Old East Village Building - One of the NYC’s Largest Spaces Devoted to the Arts

3/10/2023

FROM THE FOLKS AT:

The Joyce Theater Foundation
announce the organization’s intention to expand into New York City’s East Village with the lease of an extraordinary 58,000 square-foot multi-level building located at 287 East 10th Street at Avenue A. Previously occupied by the Boys Club of New York since its 1901 opening, The Joyce aims to continue offering community services and amenities with an emphasis on the performing arts and especially dance. Eventually, The Joyce Theater Foundation hopes to make the Tomkins Square Park-adjacent building a hub for local and international artists and companies alike as they create works that will reach audiences across the city and around the world.

Seeing a clear and urgent need for rehearsal and studio space in New York City, The Joyce has entered into a year-long lease of this expansive 58,000 square-foot East Village building to accommodate dancers and creators in every step of their artistic journey. The international leader in dance presentation will initially make available a handful of studios at subsidized rates for dance artists, including a studio specifically for tap and percussive artists. Long known for its fostering of emerging talent in the dance world, The Joyce sees this as a way to solidify its commitment to artists beyond the work taking place on its own stage with this new space for ideation and the creation of movement.

At the conclusion of this first-year lease, The Joyce intends to purchase the building in order to share this valuable arts-community resource on a permanent basis. The purchase, facilitated by real estate advisor Paul Wolf of Denham Wolf Real Estate Services, is contingent upon the success of fundraising efforts over the course of the coming year. These additional funds are vital in supporting the renovation of the building, completing its transformation into an extraordinary—and much-needed—destination for the performing arts.

Soon Available for Subsidized Dance Rentals
