ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITY - $20,000 HONORARIUM - APPLICATION DEADLINE - SEPT 8

WE HOPE YOU ARE ENCOURAGE TO APPLY

The Harlem Arts Alliance is pleased to share the following information from the Harlem Veteran's Center and the NYC Department of Cultural Affair with our network.

The Harlem Veteran's Center, the Mayor's Office for Veteran Affairs (MOVA) and NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) are seeking an artist-in-residence at the Harlem Vet Center to use his/her art practice to reach more women veterans and bring them closer to the services and resources available at the Center.

Reaching Women Veterans through the Arts
The Harlem Vet Center is particularly interested in utilizing the arts to engage women veterans.  Women veterans are often considered “the lost and forgotten.”  They do not always view themselves as veterans, and often times are not aware of, nor do they take advantage of available services.  The Harlem Vet Center is committed to reaching this particularly vulnerable population and is interested in engaging an artist to help the effort.

The Project
MOVA and DCLA are joining together to offer a residency opportunity for an artist to develop and implement a project that specifically targets women veterans and encourages them to join the veteran community.

The artist-in-residence would have experience in working collaboratively with communities and ideally, would facilitate a program that engages soldiers, their families, and to an extent, the Center’s surrounding community over an eight-month period beginning in fall, 2015.

The selected artist should be interested in veterans’ issues, have experience with social interventions through artistic practice, and have a desire to foster community among the Vet Center population. Additionally, the artist should locate opportunities to connect the Vet Center to the public from the surrounding neighborhood. Once an artist is selected, Vet Center staff, as well as representatives from MOVA and DCLA, will work with the artist to refine project goals and coordinate a schedule for residency activities and use of facilities.

We hope you will be encouraged to make a submission or will encourage someonein your network to submit.  Complete details are attached.

CUNY Dance Initiative Announces Fall 2015 Events

The CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI), a university-wide residency program now in its second year, announces its fall 2015 public events.  Led by New York City’s public university system, CDI is a new model for collaboration. By facilitating residencies for New York City choreographers and companies on CUNY campuses, CDI aims to support dance artists, enhance college students’ cultural life and education, and build audiences for dance at CUNY performing arts centers.

Eleven CUNY colleges in all five boroughs have been hosting residencies since January 2015, and the residency artists and their projects represent a wide-range of ideas and styles that reflect the diversity of the CUNY communities. CDI directly assists colleges with artist fees, rehearsal expenses, and marketing efforts.

Artists are selected through an annual open application process and each campus chooses its residency companies. The application for 2016 residencies will open September 10 at 10am and close October 1 at 11:59pm. More information can be found at www.cuny.edu/danceinitiative.

ABOUT THE CUNY DANCE INITIATIVE

The CUNY Dance Initiative is a new residency program providing rehearsal and performance space to New York City choreographers and dance companies. CDI was developed in response to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s 2010 report “We Make Do,” which cited the critical need for affordable dance rehearsal space in New York City, and mentioned available performing arts centers and other spaces on CUNY campuses. A successful pilot project in 2013 supporting choreographic residencies and performances on four CUNY campuses prompted CDI to expand its scope, with 10 colleges hosting 19 residencies in 2014 and 11 colleges hosting 26 residencies in 2015. The Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College is the administrator of CDI.

DORIS DUKE CHARITABLE FOUNDATION AWARDS SUPPORT TO 19 DANCE COMPANIES AND PRESENTERS THROUGH NEW INITIATIVE

Leadership Grants Program for Dance Distinguishes Exemplary Organizations and Strengthens Their Capacity to Achieve Long-Term Goals

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF) announced today the 19 outstanding dance companies and presenters receiving grants, totaling $8,025,000, through the Leadership Grants Program for Dance. This all-new initiative supports the self-defined, long-term goals of organizations that have demonstrated excellence in and sustained commitment to the field of dance.

Grantees distinguished themselves by the quality of their choreography, the impact of their touring on communities across the country, and the successful expansion of their own initiatives and educational programming. DDCF is now providing each organization with flexible funds that encourage them to build upon the unique courses they have already charted and to continue to pursue their vision for the long term. This new support will enable grantees to realize their plans to increase organizational capacity, execute new artistic initiatives, strengthen data and evaluation systems, or other strategies that they have determined will best lead them to continued success.

Ben Cameron, program director for the arts at DDCF, said, “These grants support dance companies and dance presenters that have been leaders, both artistically and organizationally, thinking creatively about reaching audiences in exciting new ways. We are honored to support their work with these flexible grants, designed to help them achieve their self-defined, long-term goals.”

The 19 organizations are:
  • Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (New York, NY), with a grant of $500,000
  • Alonzo King LINES Ballet (San Francisco, CA), with a grant of $500,000
  • AXIS Dance Company (Oakland, CA), with a grant of $200,000
  • Ballet Hispanico (New York, NY), with a grant of $500,000
  • Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) (Brooklyn, NY), with a grant of $500,000
  • Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, A Dance Company (Brooklyn, NY), with a grant of $200,000
  • Danspace Project, Inc. (New York, NY), with a grant of $200,000
  • Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (Chicago, IL), with a grant of $500,000
  • Jacob’s Pillow Dance (Becket, MA), with a grant of $500,000
  • The Joyce Theater (New York, NY), with a grant of $500,000
  • Margaret Jenkins Dance Company (San Francisco, CA), with a grant of $200,000
  • Mark Morris Dance Group (Brooklyn, NY), with a grant of $1,000,000
  • ODC (San Francisco, CA), with a grant of $500,000
  • Stephen Petronio Company (New York, NY), with a grant of $200,000
  • Ragamala Dance Company (Minneapolis, MN), with a grant of $200,000
  • STREB (Brooklyn, NY), with a grant of $400,000
  • Paul Taylor Dance Company (New York, NY), with a grant of $500,000
  • Urban Bush Women (Brooklyn, NY), with a grant of $200,000
  • White Bird (Portland, OR), with a grant of $200,000

The Leadership Grants Program for Dance responds to the ongoing and dynamic evolution of the dance field in which many nationally celebrated companies may face future challenges or changes. The initiative acknowledges the various ways grantees may choose to embrace the years ahead, whether through artistic and/or organizational means. (Potential uses of the grant exclude physical capital investments and bricks-and-mortar projects.) DDCF has offered small organizations $200,000, mid-sized organizations $400,000 and large organizations $500,000 in grants that span up to four years. A single grant of $1 million goes to the Mark Morris Dance Group in recognition not only of the company but of its extensive efforts in education and outreach, including its dance program for Parkinson’s disease patients. DDCF has also offered additional planning grants, ranging from $25,000-50,000 each, to provide several organizations with long-term strategic planning assistance.
