For a decade, The Laundromat Project’s Create Change artist development program has connected communities and artists in meaningful ways, creating a diverse corps of creative community leaders. Each year, we select 20 multiracial, multi-disciplinary artists and changemakers living in the New York metropolitan area to produce eight new projects through our fellowships, commissions, and residencies. For a period of 6-8 months, participants are guided through workshops, studio visits, and intense community building focused on experiential coaching, in order to build and develop community-responsive creative projects.
Create Change participants acquire the necessary practical and ethical tools to critically examine the role of artists working with community members. The program further provides artists with a community of support, opportunities to build networks and the resources they need to further develop their creative practices and positively impact the communities where they live, work, and grow.
We are accepting applications for our fellowship, residency, and commissions programs. Learn more about each of these opportunities.

United States Artists Announces Deana Haggag As President and CEO

PictureDeana Haggag Photo: Olivia Obineme
United States Artists (USA) is pleased to announce the hiring of Deana Haggag as its new President and CEO. She will officially assume the position on April 3rd.

“I’m honored to have been chosen to lead this incredible organization,” said Haggag. “USA’s mission is more important now than ever. USA Fellows embody the creativity, passion, diversity, and talent of this country, and the incredible heights American artists are capable of. It will be a privilege to support them in their future efforts, and to celebrate what they’ve already accomplished.”

Haggag has been the Executive Director of The Contemporary, a nomadic, non-collecting art museum based in Baltimore, MD, since 2013. Prior to that she was the Curator-in-Residence at Baltimore’s Gallery CA. In addition to her work at The Contemporary, Deana lectures extensively, consults on various public art initiatives, contributes to cultural publications, and teaches at institutions such as Towson University and Johns Hopkins University.

She is on the board of the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance, and the council of Common Field, and has served as a member of the Affiliates Board for the Museums and Society Program at Johns Hopkins University and StageOne/FANS council at the Baltimore School for the Arts. Haggag was named one of “10 People to Watch Under 30” by the Baltimore Sun in 2013, and a “Young Cultural Innovator” by the Salzburg Global Forum in 2015. She received her MFA in Curatorial Practice from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a BA from Rutgers University–Newark in Art History and Philosophy.

Haggag’s appointment comes as USA nears completion of its $20 million operations endowment campaign. The endowment consists of an initial 5-year, $10 million challenge grant from the Ford Foundation, which has been matched by million-dollar grants from The Rockefeller Foundation, The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Barr Foundation, Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and private giving.

“It’s an exciting time for USA; all the more so with Deana coming on board,” says USA Board Chairman Steven Oliver. “The continued growth of both our financial and human resources represents not only the tremendous success USA has had thus far, but also the role it will play going forward. This promises to be an uncertain time for the support of the arts. I can’t think of anyone more committed, eager, or prepared than Deana to lead USA in this endeavor.”

USA’s most recent class of 46 Fellows, announced in November, work across nine creative disciplines, and each of them will receive unrestricted $50,000 cash awards. The awards honor their creative accomplishments and support their ongoing artistic and professional development. The 2016 Fellowships mark a decade of support from USA, which with this new class will have given out almost $25 million since its inception in 2006. USA Fellowships are awarded to artists at all stages of their careers and from all areas of the country through a rigorous nomination and panel selection process. Fellowships are given in the following disciplines: Architecture & Design, Crafts, Dance, Literature, Media, Music, Theater & Performance, Traditional Arts, and Visual Arts.

The Fellowships allow artists to use the unrestricted funds for whatever they need most, and so to take risks and push their careers forward. Among past awardees are film director Barry Jenkins, composer David Lang, novelist Annie Proulx, playwright David Henry Hwang, choreographer Bill T. Jones, and visual artist Kara Walker.

USA will hold its annual Artist Assembly in celebration of its 2016 Fellows, and the 10th anniversary of the inception of the program, in Chicago, March 27-29, 2017. The Assembly includes performances, artist presentations, and opportunities for artists to give back by partnering with local not-for-profit organizations, community arts organizations, and schools that serve young art students.

LUMBERYARD CONTEMPORARY PERFORMING ARTS SELECTS KATHY WESTWATER TO RECEIVE 2017 SOLANGE MACARTHUR AWARD FOR NEW CHOREOGRAPHY

Commissioning Award Exemplifies Growing Organization’s Commitment to the Development of New Work Across the Performing Arts

Lumberyard Contemporary Performing Arts (formerly American Dance Institute) is pleased to announce that its Artistic Advisory Board has selected New York City-based choreographer and dancer Kathy Westwater, whose work The Brooklyn Rail has described as “at the limits of the human,” as the winner of the 2017 Solange MacArthur Award for New Choreography. The organization will provide Westwater with $10,000 in commissioning funds, fee-free fiscal sponsorship, strategic marketing and development support, and a presentation of the commissioned work in the 2018-19 season.

The annual Solange MacArthur Award reflects Lumberyard’s vital role in supporting the creation of new work by American performing artists. Lumberyard’s Artistic Advisory Board—including Brian Brooks, Jane Comfort, David Dorfman, Doug Elkins, Dan Hurlin, Jodi Melnick, David Neumann and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar—selects the winner following a closed nomination process. Previous recipients include Raja Feather Kelly (2016), Steven Reker (2015) and Chris Schlichting (2014).
Lumberyard Executive & Artistic Director Adrienne Willis said, “Lumberyard is dedicated to supporting artists as they challenge themselves, audiences and their art form, and the Solange MacArthur Award serves our core mission to enable performing artists to make the work they have imagined.”

Westwater said, “I am honored and grateful to receive this award, especially because it was recommended by a group of artists I admire and respect. The commitment that Lumberyard makes to the creation of new work is felt. This will enable me to realize a project I’ve imagined and I can't wait to begin. There are many who make what I do possible—dancers, colleagues, collaborators, family, teachers, students, arts workers and audience—and to them I am also deeply grateful.”
