Continuing their celebration of women during Women’s History Month, and now confirming their 20 years of commitment, the BAAD! Ass Women Festival continues this week with a one-night-only performance by Bauman-Morales in huracán: storm medicine “… a personal dance story, living altar and town hall about destruction, translation, and the transformative power of storms. Told from the body and voice of a queer, lightskinned Oakland boricua, storm medicine is queer spanglish dance ritual in homage to the unseen powers that trip us up, shake us awake and call us home,” according to the release.  Find out more here
 
Okwui Okpokwasili and Peter Born

As part of the “TILT Kids Festival,” Okpokwasili's will offer Adaku's Revolt “…celebrating the bravery of children who listen to their bodies and challenge societal values, through a story of a young black girl who summons her inner strength to revolt against imposed beauty standards and wear her hair naturally,” notes the release.  Find out more here

The BAAD! Ass Women Festival concert series continues with choreographers from the Bronx and beyond including: Sole Sisters- Amber Funk Barton, Beatrice Capote, Deborah Conton, Mai Lê Hô and Tamara Williams (March 23), and ​ Davalois Fearon Dance (March 29–30) in “For C.J.,” “… dedicated to artistic director Davalois Fearon’s nephew C.J., who was the victim of a fatal asthma attack in 2017,” notes the release. Though dominated by dance, there are also theater and film offerings. Find out more here

CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI) – Various Artists

To celebrate five years of supporting New York City dance artists through a residency program, CDI offers a series of performances and installations by 11 artists/companies over the five years in two separate programs including: Heidi Latsky Dance, Sonia Olla & Ismael Fernandez, Andrew Nemr, Miki Orihara Urban Bush Women, Parijat Desai, MBDance, Ephrat Asherie Dance and more.  Find out more here
 
From the Horse’s Mouth – Various Artists

For their 21st year of paying tribute to dance artists, Tina Croll and Jamie Cunningham, who conceived “From the Horses’s Mouth” will honor dance critic Deborah Jowitt.  Activities will include panel discussions, plus performances by Ella Baff, Darrah Carr, Pat Catterson, Yoshiko Chuma, Emily Coates, Ze'eva Cohen, Tina Croll, Jamie Cunningham, Douglas Dunn, Liz Gerring, Naomi Goldberg Haas, Ellen Graff, Stuart Hodes, Sara Hook, Djassi Johnson, Deborah Jowitt, Phyllis Lamhut, Cherylyn Lavagnino, Marcia Lerner Hofer, James Martin, Meredith Monk, Wendy Perron, Rajika Puri, Valda Setterfield, Vicky Shick, Marcia Siegel, Robert Small, Gus Solomons jr, Andy Teirstein, Martine van Hamel, and Elizabeth Zimmer and more. *Cast subject to change. Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble

“I’m not here to be polite” is the quote from Anna Sokolow that drives this season by the Ensemble. On the program will be works by Valerie Bettis, Robert Cleary, and Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble founder Jim May. Daniel Fetecua Soto will join as guest artist. Find out more here
 
China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater

Traditional Chinese music, costumes, and choreography are set for Princess Zhaojun the life story of one of China's most important heroines, Wang Zhaojun, “…then an imperial concubine, who sacrifices her comfortable palace life to secure peace on the turbulent border of northern China,” according to the release. Nicky Paraiso

La Mama
In the world premiere of Paraiso’s now my hand is ready for my heart: intimate histories, he dives into a “…deep exploration of [his] life, investigating aging, identity, sexuality, class and race.” Paraiso is joined by choreographer/dancers Irene Hultman, Jon Kinzel, Vicky Shick, and Paz Tanjuaquio in performance and as collaborators. As part of Gibney's
"Pop Performance" series, and in celebration of their 20th anniversary, Ohio's GroundWorks Dance Theater will present works by Dianne McIntyre, James Gregg and artistic director David Shimotakahara.  Find out more here

It’s Showtime NYC!
The Met

The dancers of “It’s Showtime NYC!” continues their regular presentations at The Met combining hip-hop and the age of chivalry matching freestyle dance with knights in armor. This series is commissioned by MetLiveArts in collaboration with The Met's Arms and Armor department and the urban dance organization Dancing in the Streets of the South Bronx. Find out more here

Concluding its 2018-19 dance series, dancer/choreographer Émard returns to the stage after a 15-year absence from performing with Le chant des sirènes, ("Siren Song"), the newest solo work “…probing the states of being of a man who wants to believe that all is not lost,” notes the release.  Find out more here

    I am a performer, historian, consultant and dance writer.
