To celebrate 25 years, Gina Gibney with her company Gina Gibney Dance, put together an evening of duets she made from 1992 to now simply titled “Duet” (March 23 – 26). In a brief introduction, Gibney reflected on one of the two buildings that bear her name. The performances were held in the downtown building, 280 Broadway, which she points out “...is all about the future.” The intimate, an audience of just over 20, and energizing evening, was geared towards an optimistic future. The series of duets move from studio to studio (Patricia Hoffbauer used this same design in her Intimate Spaces and Friendly People also at Gibney) Here, like with Hoffbauer, the audience is given options for how to view each duet. On each wall is the name of the work and the year each was created. Although costumes, decor and local gave a different look, the movement, a continual weaving in and around or carrying and being carried by partner after partner, looked the same. Nonetheless, Gibney guided the audience’s eyes wisely in her choice and design of local showcasing the building, the most interesting was a long, narrow and unknown back hall where a bank of elevators, a brick wall, commercial carpeting, and grandiose hotel lights was the set. The intimacy of the evening was carried out with nice dancing by Natsuki Arai, Nigel Campbell, Alexeya Eyma-Manderson, Amy Miller, Devin Oshiro and Brandon Welch. The event was dedicated to Gibney’s partner and founding chair Pamela van Zandt.
