Heartbeat Opera enters its ninth season and is seeking a full-time Executive Director. Heartbeat is looking for a visionary, ambitious, and energetic administrative leader to join their close-knit team and co-steer the
vibrant, young company into its next chapter and a thriving future. The Executive Director is the chief administrator of the company, providing vision, strategic leadership, organization, and direction for all business aspects of Heartbeat Opera. They will lead financial management activities, human resources, strategic planning, fundraising, and institutional advancement of this cutting-edge, fast-growing company. They will uphold the values that have been at the center of Heartbeat’s work and its day-to-day operation. The Executive Director will work in close collaboration with the Artistic Director to carry out the vision of Heartbeat Opera. The successful candidate for this role will be an ambitious and energetic leader who combines a passion for the performing arts with significant, relevant experience in managing the operational and financial aspects of a not-for-profit arts organization. They will possess most of these skills and experiences: The candidate must be willing to reside full-time in New York City, with the ability to work at least part time from Heartbeat’s Chelsea offices. Heartbeat is entering a new phase as we move out of our founder-driven first 8 seasons; beginning this summer, both Ethan and Louisa will have stepped down from their leadership positions and will remain on the board. Jacob will begin a one-year term as Interim Artistic Director to lead the company through the 2022-23 season, during which the organization will conduct a search for a new full-time Artistic Director. Dan will assume the role of Music Director. The Executive Director will work closely with the Interim Artistic Director to steer us into this next phase. The Department of Dance in the Peck School of the Arts is hiring a Visiting Assistant Professor to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Contemporary African Diasporic and/or Latin Diasporic dance forms, as well as composition, improvisation, and other related creative and technical courses. Candidates will also be expected to create works on student dancers for faculty/guest concerts. In addition, they should maintain academic and/or creative research and professional engagement with local, state and national associations. The incumbent will work alongside curatorial and publications staff to realize the exhibition and publication; responsibilities will include conducting research, making checklist updates, compiling bibliographic backmatter, obtaining image use permissions, research, and logistical support. Demonstrated expertise in the history of dance and choreography is required; specific knowledge of dance of the African Diaspora preferred.
