Alicia Alonso, Artistic Director and Founder of The National Ballet of Cuba, known for her impeccable technique and exuberant stage presence, passed away on October 17 at a hospital in Havana. She was 98.
The National Ballet of Cuba became one of the most prestigious ballet companies in the world, and under her guidance, its school became highly successful in producing world-class dancers.
Alonso represented Cuba triumphantly in 65 countries, performing for audiences all over the world, from Helsinki to Buenos Aires, from New York to Tokyo and Melbourne. She is the receipient of 266 international awards and the choreographer of 69 works - romantic, classic, and contemporary - for The National Ballet of Cuba.
