American Dance Institute (ADI) is pleased to announce that it will transform a former lumberyard on the Catskill, NY waterfront into a state-of-the-art new home for contemporary dance and performance. The four-building facility on the Hudson River will host ADI’s acclaimed Incubator program, which gives artists and companies from across the U.S. housing, space, time and other resources to develop new work before a New York or national premiere, and will help revitalize the area. ADI plans to break ground in May 2016 and has received a $500,000 Empire State Development Grant—the largest in Greene County—for Phase I of construction: the main building, including the theater, artist housing, a warm-up studio and a community courtyard. The building, with an estimated $4 million renovation, is slated to open in May 2018. 2016-17 will be ADI’s final season in its Rockville facility, although the organization plans to continue supporting the presentation of contemporary dance in the D.C. area; ADI will reveal details of these plans in the coming months.
The announcement of ADI/Catskill, as the project is currently called, is the latest chapter in ADI’s ambitious emergence under Executive Director Adrienne Willis, who assumed leadership in 2010. Willis has reimagined the Rockville, MD-based organization—originally a ballet school—as a national one that constantly evaluates the needs of artists throughout their creation process and fills gaps in the structures that exist to support them. Willis and the board have been working aggressively to expand the role and relevance of the organization—to find ways to supplement, rather than supplant, existing institutions. ADI’s Incubator, launched in 2011, epitomizes this aim.
Willis said, “We are overwhelmed by the support from NY State and the Catskill community. This move will allow ADI to operate with significantly lower overhead and, most importantly, will allow us to exponentially increase the number of artists and productions we can support annually.”
