BAX | Brooklyn Arts Exchange is excited to announce the 2016/17 BAX Artists in Residence

First Year Artists in Residence are:
Tanisha Christie
(Theater)

Catherine Galasso
(Dance)

Mariana Valencia
(Dance)

Second Year Artists in Residence are:

Kristine Haruna Lee
(Theater)

Marissa Perel
(Interdisciplinary)

Ni'Ja Whitson
(Dance)

Selected through a rigorous and competitive process these dance, theater and performance artists represent some of the most exciting artists working in NYC today. BAX provides these exceptional artists with an artistic home base for a one to two year period, giving them a tangible sense of permanence and place. BAX's Artist in Residence  program is tailored to each artist's unique needs, process and artistic practice. Its structure develops peer support, collaborative problem-solving and constructive criticism.

Artist In Residence (AIR) receive priority booking of 300 free hours of rehearsal space per year, and an annual stipend. AIR meet regularly for one-on-one consultations with Founding & Executive Director Marya Warshaw, and Artistic Advisors Abigail Browde (of 600 HIGHWAYMEN) and Nia Love. Group meetings with all six artists and advisors occur every six weeks to discuss topics of interest to the group, including video documentation; developing relationships with producers; challenges of collaboration and co-directing; establishing a teaching practice; and finding life/work balance.

These artists have opportunities to present works in progress and/or finished work at BAX with full production and marketing support. Starting with the AIR Open Studio Showings in the Fall (November 19 & 20) and Winter (February 4 & 5). Each of the six artists then presents work developed over the course of their residency year in their own weekend between March-June 2017 in the BAX Theater (exact dates TBD).

Additionally, Second Year AIR have the opportunity to curate two-night showcases grounded in their own artistic inquiries in February and March, (exact dates TBD).

Following their residencies, BAX often assists artists in delivering their vision to a broader audience by co-producing their work in other venues, or establishing relationships with producers and funders that will allow them to move forward.
