FROM THE FOLKS AT IABD:

The 31st Annual International Conference and Festival of Blacks in Dance will be held January 23 – 27, 2019 in Dayton, OH in partnership with Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. We extend an invitation to all members of the IABD community to help shape the program and highlight areas of particular importance to the field through our active Call for Questions and Input.

At the 2018 Conference and Festival, we celebrated our 30th Anniversary of Conference and Festival convening by Honoring Legacies: Past, Present, and Future. For 2019, we want to extend that line of thinking to consider and generate conversation around the theme Etched In Stone: Resilient Through Time and the following topics:
  • Preservation/History of our Dances
  • Curating
  • Archiving
  • Closing the gap between Academia and Black Concert Dance
  • Dancing Identities: Race, Gender, Sexuality, Class
  • Teaching, Learning, Pedagogy
  • Training our Youth - On Stage and Behind the Scenes
  • Practice / Choreography
  • Globality / Community / International Dialogues and Collaborative Opportunities with Africa, Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, and other countries/continents
  • “Dancing while Black” and Cultural Memory
  • Funding and the role of the Philanthropist
  • Leveraging greater Administrative/Management and Technical Positions in the field of Dance
  • The role of Digital and Social Media in Dance
This year, we request that conference participants and supporters send in questions that engage the topics above, as well as any that we might have overlooked. Once selected, the questions will be posed to the IABD community for responses. Based on those responses, we will select panelists for each question and invite them to participate either through a Digital Presentation/ Film, Individual Paper, Lecture, Lecture-Demonstration, Mixed-Media, Movement Workshop, Panel, or Roundtable Discussion.
The questions posed in the lead up to the Conference and Festival will be used to:

1.  Help identify which submitted questions explore topics of particular interest to the community;
2.  Craft the conference and festival program to ensure sessions are targeted at the most pressing questions; and,

3.  Build a collaborative theme and agenda for the Conference and Festival.

Please submit questions via the SUBMIT NOW BUTTON below.

Questions and Input must be submitted by Friday, March 23, 2018.

The IABD Program Committee looks forward to learning from you all and hopes to see you in Dayton, OH for Etched In Stone: Resilient Through Time
