Effective February 1, 2018 Aaron Mattocks replaces Martin Wechsler after 32 years. Linda Shelton, Executive Director of The Joyce Theater Foundation, Inc., announced today that Aaron Mattocks will take over as Director of Programming, effective February 1, 2018. Mattocks replaces Martin Wechsler, who stepped down at the end of 2017 after 32 years at The Joyce, 22 of those as Director of Programming, helping to transform the organization into the world’s leading presenter of dance.
Upon the announcement of his departure, Martin Wechsler said, “In my 22 years as The Joyce Theater’s Director of Programming, I’ve had the privilege and responsibility of providing emerging choreographers with their first residencies at Joyce SoHo; grown up alongside artists like Stephen Petronio and David Parsons; worked with masters like Trisha Brown, Merce Cunningham, and Twyla Tharp; and presented large-scale international companies, including The Royal Ballet, at Lincoln Center. After a restful break, I am excited to pursue new professional opportunities, but I know I will miss working with Linda Shelton to help choreographers and dance companies develop their work and share it with the public.
In announcing Aaron Mattocks, Executive Director Linda Shelton said, “After an extensive search that produced several wonderfully talented candidates for the new Director of Programming at The Joyce, I am extremely confident that we have identified the best person for the position. Aaron’s multilayered background as a dancer, artist and administrator is sure to enhance our programming on many levels. I am very excited to be working with Aaron on this next chapter for the Joyce.”
“Programming at The Joyce represents a delicate and intricate challenge of balancing excellence, accessibility, diversity of aesthetic voices, innovation, and the global breadth of creativity, constantly striving to find a potent mixture of local, national, and international artists of distinction across contemporary, popular and traditional forms,” said The Joyce Theater’s new Director of Programming Aaron Mattocks. “I look forward to working with Linda and The Joyce team to continue to foster the meaning, value, context and, increasingly, new audiences for these kinds of artists and their work to thrive on The Joyce stage.”
