In an EYE ON DANCE video episode on “The Challenges Facing Female Choreographers,” produced in 1988, EOD moderator Celia Ipiotis investigates the topic with Jawole Willa Jo Zollar (founder of Urban Bush Women; Sarah Skaggs, modern dancer/choreographer and Miriam Mahdaviani, former NYC Ballet corps member and first female choreographer at NYCB.
The EOD video conversation focuses on challenges faced by female choreographers in a male dominated choreographic field. This includes available opportunities, support for creating new works, the impact of critics and criticism as well as advantages offered by choreographic workshops. Performance excerpts include: Zollar’s “Anarchy, Wild Women and Dinah” Mahdaviani’s “Adagio for Two” and Skagg’s “Noh Body.”
The screening is followed by a live panel discussion reflecting on the concerns in 1980’s to the realities of today. Curator Celia Ipiotis speaks with Ms. Mahdaviani, Ms. Skaggs and Camille R. Brown, modern dance and theater choreographer. This is followed by a Q & A.
