OPPORTUNITY: Jumatatu Poe seeks collaborators on upcoming project

Hello folks,

I hope you are well.

I have a request for some assistance.  Currently, I am trying to locate some collaborators for a project I am working on - Let ‘im Move You: This Is a Formation. The project is the fourth performance work in a series of collaborative choreographic projects that are examining the J-Sette dance form, an innovation of majorettes from historically Black colleges and universities that is also popularly practiced among squads of queer Black men.  The project will have 8 dancers and a DJ, and feature video design elements in spaces in which audiences are mostly mobile.  You can see an early project portfolio here.

There are 5 collaborative design and/or administrative roles that I am trying to fill for the project, and I would love some points in the right direction.  I would love to be able to work with additional amazing Black/POC women and/or Black/POC transgender folks with this project.  All positions are paid.  Some details below:

Producer or Production Administrator:
Needs include -

• • ability to create and collect contracts
  • organizing and maintaining project schedules (rehearsals, residencies, payment, production deadlines, insurance, etc.)
  • ample patience for and interest in human beings
  • working with presenters and social media specialists on marketing strategies
  • excitement about understanding a project designed around various types of performance spaces (black box and gallery spaces, outdoor sidewalk spaces, niteclub spaces)
  • maintenance of communication and production strategies with project partners
  • organizing project newsletters every other month
  • PROBLEM-SOLVING APTITUDE
  • organizing travel and lodging
  • making and taking calls
  • interest in creating a loving environment
  • preparing final reports for grant organizations
  • ideally located in Philadelphia or NYC
  • ideally with experience in, or aptitude toward, tour management

Schedule includes -

• • 20-60 hours a month (Oct ’17 - Jul ’18); schedule to be designed collaboratively
  • digital meetings with project collaborates around twice a month (Oct ’17 - Jul ’18)

 Stage Manager / Technical Director:
Needs include -

• • administrative aptitude, especially around schedule design for complex cast/collaborator structures
  • ample patience and interest in human beings
  • ability to model processes using non-deterministic finite state machines or complex flow charts
    • utilizing software like The Brain, for example
  • familiarity with, or aptitude toward, interactive video design software technology
    • like VDMX
  • interest in problem solving various locations (black box and gallery spaces, outdoor sidewalk spaces, niteclub spaces)
  • interest in creating a loving environment
  • ideally can design lighting
  • ideally located in Philadelphia or NYC, but national distance is not necessarily prohibitive

  • North Carolina residency Jan 16-21 (2018)

Lighting Designer:
Needs include -

• • knowledge of how to light with video
  • ample patience and interest in human beings
  • interest in integrating light structures with sound design structures
    • we may also be working with some DJ lighting equipment
  • excitement to problem solve lighting possibilities in various locations (black box and gallery spaces, outdoor sidewalk spaces, niteclub spaces)
  • interest in creating a loving environment

Schedule includes -

• • digital meetings with project collaborators and administrators around twice a month (Oct ’17 - Jul ’18)
  • Tallahassee residency Mar 11-17 (2018)
  • NYC (or upstate) residency July 2018
  • tour dates between July 2018 and Nov 2019

Costume Designer
Needs include -

• • familiarity with bustle design
  • ample patience and interest in human beings
  • interest in costume design of light-responsive materials (translucent, glow-in-the-dark, invisible)
  • interest in magician tricks with costumes (disappearing parts, parts that appear out of nowhere)
  • interest in creating a loving environment

Schedule includes -

• • digital meetings with project collaborators and administrators around twice a month (Oct ’17 - Jul ’18)
  • mock-up creation by Dec ‘17
  • completion for August ’18 premiere

Set Designer
Needs include -

• • Not really sure yet, but will have to do with creating integrations with video and costumes
  • ample patience and interest in human beings
  • design of a low-maintenance, tour-ready set
  • interest in creating a loving environment

Schedule includes -

• • digital meetings with project collaborators and administrators around once a month (Oct ’17 - Jul ’18)
  • mock-up creation by Dec ‘17
  • implementation for August ’18 premiere
