BAM Harvey Theater
October 7-10
Dream’d in a Dream, the new work by Seán Curran Company began when in 2012 the company toured Central Asia as part of DanceMotion USA, an ongoing, international cultural exchange initiative of the US Department of State, produced by BAM. In Bishkek, the Kyrgyz Republic,
“…the company attended a performance by the traditional music ensemble Ustatshakirt Plus, led by Musical Director/Composer Nurlanbek Nyshanov…[and] inspired by their music, Curran approached Nyshanov about creating an evening-length work of American contemporary dance, with movement informed by Kyrgyz culture and featuring Kyrgyz mountain music—a project Curran envisioned as “contemporary urban folkdance,” notes the release, Dream’d in a Dream is the result. The work, co-commission by BAM and University of Notre Dame, features nine dancers and six members of Ustatshakirt Plus performing live on-stage. Dream’d in a Dream is named after Walt Whitman’s poem, a favorite of Nurlanbek Nyshanov. The engagement serves as the BAM debut for Seán Curran Company and the US debut for Ustatshakirt Plus.
