For their 41st annual dance concert and Pow Wow, the Thunderbird American Dancers will share dances, stories and traditional music from the Iroquois and Native Peoples of the Northeast, Southwest and Great Plains regions. “The event has become a treasured New York tradition for celebrating our diversity by honoring the culture of our first Americans.” The Pow Wow, as is the norm, is more than “…a spectator event: it is a joyous reunion for native peoples nationwide and an opportunity for the non-Indian community to voyage into the philosophy and beauty of Native culture,” notes the release. The South African choreographer, Masilo, will present her critically acclaimed version of Swan Lake described as “…extraordinary, reimagined and avant-garde.” Masilo’s Swan Lake tells the story of prince Siegfried, who falls in love with a male Odile and discovers his true self while facing disapproval and controversy.
