For their 41st annual dance concert and Pow Wow, the Thunderbird American Dancers will share dances, stories and traditional music from the Iroquois and Native Peoples of the Northeast, Southwest and Great Plains regions. “The event has become a treasured New York tradition for celebrating our diversity by honoring the culture of our first Americans.” The Pow Wow, as is the norm, is more than “…a spectator event: it is a joyous reunion for native peoples nationwide and an opportunity for the non-Indian community to voyage into the philosophy and beauty of Native culture,” notes the release.  Find out more here 
 
Dada Masilo
The Joyce Theater

The South African choreographer, Masilo, will present her critically acclaimed version of Swan Lake described as “…extraordinary, reimagined and avant-garde.” Masilo’s Swan Lake tells the story of prince Siegfried, who falls in love with a male Odile and discovers his true self while facing disapproval and controversy.  Find out more here

For Childs and Robbins’ Hex, six dance artists come together “…in a communal generative process whereby each participant crafted her own dance, which was subsequently studied and responded to by the group,” notes the release.  Find out more here
 
Robert Ashley + Steve Paxton
The Kitchen
January 28 - 30 & February 4 - 6
This duo will present the world premiere of Quicksand, an opera-novel for music, dance, and light, composed from a novel of the same name by the late Ashley. The work is divided into three acts of 16 scenes with choreography by Paxton.  Find out more here

This group of performers comes together to present the world premiere of Lyrical Dances For A Lost Generation “… [where] 12 choreographers hit the stage with no concept, no media, and no lengthy psycho-babble…[and will]…dance their hearts out- embracing…the 'J.O.D' (Joy of Dance),” according to the release.  Find out more here

UNTAPPED!, is the title of the new work by RAW, the Australian hip hop, percussion, beatboxing and competitive tap group on their return trip since 2011.  Find out more here 
 
Brother(hood) Dance! and The Median Movement

 “DraftWork,” the informal Saturday afternoon series curated by Ishmael Houston-Jones which shows work in various stages, will present Brother(hood) Dance! Kuumba, a company member of Urban Bush Women, and Dusilová, a Czech musical shaman specializing in layering voice and electronics, come together at JACK in Prague - New York Effects.  Find out more here 
 
Anne Zuerner
Triskelion Arts

In Zuerner’s Archaea, “…inspired by a cemetery on the Brooklyn/Queens border ,” she is joined by performers Sara Gurevich, Jenna Purcell and Zoe Rabinowitz.  This work is a re-envisioning of a large-scale, site-based work that will premiere at the Evergreens Cemetery in Spring 2016.     I am a performer, historian, consultant and dance writer. I am a Empire State College's online program Center for Distance Learning.  I am also a former faculty member at The Ailey School and the Alvin Ailey/Fordham University dance major program, Hunter College, Sarah Lawrence College (Guest), Kean University and The Joffrey Ballet School's Jazz and Contemporary Trainee Program.  I write on dance for The Amsterdam News, Dance Magazine and various publications.  Click below to read more about me at my home page - "About Me."
