Paul Taylor American Modern Dance
March 15 – April 3
David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center
In their three-week season, Paul Taylor American Modern Dance (PTAMD) presents the New York premieres of Taylor’s 143rd dance, Sullivaniana, and his 144th work, Dilly Dilly. Additionally, as part of the initiative to curate “…great works from the history of modern dance, Mr. Taylor selected Diversion of Angels to honor Martha Graham during her Company’s 90th Anniversary Celebration in 2016." Taylor performed in Diversion of Angels during his time with the Graham Company. This year’s reconstruction, Rainbow ’Round My Shoulder, Donald McKayle’s 1959 masterpiece, will be danced by Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. McKayle’s iconic work “…depicts workers on a chain gang and powerfully explores an aspect of the African American experience,” notes the release. Also on the program are commissioned works by younger choreographers - Larry Keigwin and Doug Elkins. Keigwin will premiere Rush Hour, set to Murmuration by Adam Crystal and Elkins premieres The Weight of Smoke. Keigwin and Elkins are the first choreographers to be selected to take part in Taylor Company Commissions, Taylor’s new initiative. Find out more here
