The Bronx Academy of Arts & Dance (BAAD!)

BAAD’s annual spring dance festival “The Boogie Down Dance Series” begins with the last performances of Bronx-raised Okpokwasili’s Bronx Gothic (April 29-30) which “…draws inspiration from Victorian-era novels and West African griot storytelling to reveal a dark and powerful Bronx tale of sexual awakening, the body in transformation and the humor, love, strangeness and even terror that accompany it,” according to the release.   The series, “…a powerful mix of dance that vibrates with Bronx energy and a diversity of dance from around the city,” continues through May 31 with more special evenings and events: “Deliciously Daring Men,” “Dancin’ In The Bronx,” “A Look Inside,” “Bronx Dance Magazine Launch – The Bronx Dance Diaspora Issue,” “Dancing While Black,“ and so much more.  Find out more here
 
Dorrance Dance

Tap dancer, Michelle Dorrance, for her company Dorrance Dance will present the world premiere of ETM: Double Down set to live music created by vocalist Aaron Marcellus, bassist Greg Richardson, and controllorist & pianist Donovan Dorrance.  Find out more here

Gibney Dance: Agnes Varis Performance Lab

Bartosik’s new duet, Étroits sont les Vaisseaux  for Joanna Kotze and Lance Gries is created “…in homage to Anselm Kiefer’s 82-foot long, undulating, wave-like sculpture of the same name,” according to the release.  Find out more here 
 
Nora Chipaumire and Ekwa Msangi

Dancer, choreographer Chipaumire joins director Msangi as part of NeueHouse's Women’s History Month celebration in a discussion about their “…quest to give an authentic voice to women in their personal search for identity.  Msangi and Chipaumire have both crafted works which pay homage to female individuality and the collective family structure, whilst challenging the old belief systems of a woman’s role,” notes the release. Danspace Project

Danspace's “Food For Thought “ series returns with performances curated by Hultman (Thu), Zachery (Fri), Nishimura (Sat) and 15+ artists!  Admission is first-come, first-served with $5 + two cans of food; or $10 with no cans.  Canned goods collected through Food for Thought are donated to St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery food distribution programs.  No advance reservations.  Find our more here

Celebrating its 6th anniversary and boasting a roster that spans generations, performing site-specific works in multiple spaces within the iconic Westbeth Residence building (past home to the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and now the Martha Graham Dance Company).  Artists include Claire Porter, Manuel Vignoulle, David Parker, Shannon Gillen, plus DanceBrazil’s Jelon Vieira and more.  Find out more here

The La MaMa Moves Festival – Various Artists

There will be nine world premieres and three American premieres provoked by “…contemporary issues of gender, current ideas about the environment, questions about politics and culture are threaded through the works of the 17 artists,” notes the release.   The international lineup includes: Suk Soon Jung (Korea); Amanda Loulaki (Greek-born); Yvonne Meier (Swiss-born); Afshin Varjavandi (Italy); Sonia Olla (Spanish-born); Silvana Cardell (Argentinian-born); Jeremy Nelson (British-born); Luis Lara-Malvacias (Venezuelan-born); Poorna Swami (Indian-born); Bruno Isakovic (Croatian); Ori Flomin (Israeli-born) and Helena Franzen (Swedish).  Find out more here

    I am a performer, historian, consultant and dance writer.
