In the intimate ground floor performance space, the new Gibney Dance series of “Invocation Proclamation Manifesto” a mixed bill programs featuring short works from choreographers and performance-makers “…wrestling with the urgency of being a body at risk in 45’s America,” according to the release, closes with Angie Pittman, Kristopher K.Q. This multiweek program celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Lamentation Variations, through short commissioned works inspired by Martha Graham’s iconic solo Lamentation. Jones’ latest work, A Letter to My Nephew; a meditation on a troubled life, “…an intimate and impressionistic collage…setting a portrait of Jones’ beloved nephew Lance T. Briggs,” the notes the release is part of BAM’s “Next Wave Festival.” There is live music by composer Nick Hallett, performed by baritone Matthew Gamble and Hallett, set design by Bjorn Amelan, imagery from video designer Janet Wong, and Jones’ words to his nephew. Known as “the mother of contemporary African dance,” Acogny collaborates with choreographer and director of Ballet du Nord, Olivier Dubois as part of his “…ongoing exploration of all truths and myths surrounding the legendary premiere of Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring.” This “…reimagined solo dance by a mature and strong black woman…enclosed in a rectangular box for the entirety of the dance, dives deep into her 70-plus years of experience, delivers a laser-focused performance, and renders expressive every tiny muscle movement. Magloire will presents Stray Bird, a site-specific evening of dances to music by Ursula Mamlok, in tribute to the late composer, featuring live music by the Momenta String Quartet and works by Rebecca Walden and Mara Driscoll.
