Creators and choreographers Todd Twala and Thembi Nyandeni present the South African dance and musical event, AFRICA UMOJA: 20 YEARS FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY TOUR.  The evening, packed with a cast of 32 dancers, singers and actors is described as “…an exuberant journey through South African history, using the traditions of storytelling, drum talk, dance and song...from the potent rhythms of tribal music to the intricate steps of Gumboot dancing. The storyline takes the audience from the country’s early history, through Apartheid and into today,” notes the release.  Find out more here

Danspace Project

In Driscoll’s Thank You For Coming: Attendance, “…performers pass through ever-morphing states of physical entanglement and scenes of distorted familiarity..." notes the release.  This work is commissioned by Danspace Project and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and is co-presented by Danspace Project, Faye Driscoll Group and PS122 as part of the tenth edition of the COIL festival. Gibney Winter Series

This series features a total of 6 choreographers over two weeks.  First up is Miguel Gutierrez and The Powerful People in Gutierrez’s Age & Beauty Part 1: Mid-Career Artist/Suicide Note or &:-/, a suite of queer pieces Gutierrez is creating over the course of three years.  Other artists that complete the series are Marjani Forté, Anna Sperber, Annie-B Parson, Susan Marshall and Ryan Holsopple.  Find out more here 

16th Contemporary Dance Showcase: Japan + East Asia

This year’s showcase features Japanese choreographers: Nobuyuki Hanabusa's group, Kaori Seki and Mikiko Kawamura; and from Taiwan: I-Fen Tung with M.O.V.E Theatre, and Shang-Chi Sun.  Find out more here

Alexandra Bachzetsis 
Swiss Institute / CONTEMPORARY ART

Swiss choreographer Bachzetis’ will present her From A to B via C inspired by Diego Velázquez’s seminal rendition of Venus at her Mirror (1599-1600) and which “…explores the various provinces and domains of 'mainstream' popular culture.”  Find out more here

The Company will present LIFE STORY and LIGETI ESSAYS at New York City Center Studio 4 (January 10), ON THE NATURE OF THINGS plus FOUR SEASONS at The Ailey School Studio 6B (January 11), and will be included in Making Art Dance: curated by gallerist and former MOCA Director Jeffrey Deitch which includes set designs and costumes created in the past thirty years by Armitage with contemporary artists and fashion designers (January 11 – March 13).     I am a performer, historian, consultant and dance writer.
