For one-night-only, and produced by Eva Yaa Asantewaa, Curatoratorial Director, the young, and risk-taking choreographer, Italy Bianca Welton will premiere of her solo (Ame-Ricana) at Gibney. Drawn from her background as South Carolina native, her life experiences as a daughter and granddaughter, plus the spiritual practices and South Carolina’s culture of Black southern herbal healers and farmers, (Ame-Ricana) “… evokes the memory of her maternal great grandmother who always advised that, to neutralize harm caused by racism and the media, Black people must remember they are truly soul-rich.” In this multi-media work, packed with southern hip hop, soul and R&B, Welton “…explores her southern roots through expressive contemporary movement, photography and film. Her work aims to motivate people to experience the true essence of evolution and freedom,” according to the release. Find out more here

This initiative “…provides unprecedented exposure and a focus on Indigenous performing arts and artists based in Canada, the U.S., and Australia in partnership with multiple contemporary live performance platforms across New York City.” First Nations Dialogues also kick-starts the development of the groundbreaking Global First Nations Performance Network (GFNPN), a pilot initiative focused on cultural change through the commissiong, touring, and presenting of Indigenous performance and building demand and capacity for the same within the presenting sector,” according to the release. First Nations Dialgues is led by the transnational consortium of Emily Johnson (USA), Vallejo Gantner (USA), BlakDance (Australia), Angela Flynn/Kukuni Arts (Australia), Jacob Boehme (Australia), Ilbijerri Theatre Company (Australia), and Indigenous Performing Arts Alliance (Canada).
