Month of May
The Maplewood Township, South Orange Village, SOMA Cross Cultural Works and the AAPI Community come together to recognize and celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. These organizations stand in solidarity, the focus is on education, healing and creating joy as we honor the richness and diversity of Asian and Pacific Islander cultures with an exciting lineup of family oriented activities and programs. The South Orange Performing Arts Center will share Chen’s Awakening free on demand throughout the Month of May. Highlights include Chen’s Truth Bound, Introspection, Luminescence, and Shadow Force. At Performance Space New York, members of AFROFEMONONOMY who have collaborated in different configurations come together for the first time as a group to celebrate each other’s work. This exploratory collaboration happens with Black femme theatermakers Lileana Blain-Cruz, Charlotte Brathwaite, Eisa Davis, Jackie Sibblies Drury, Ayesha Jordan, Joie Lee, April Matthis, Jennifer Harrison Newman, Okwui Okpokwasili, Stacey Karen Robinson, Kaneza Schaal, and others. The 2021 La MaMa Moves! Dance Festival will feature works by Morgan Bullock (US), Gerald Casel (US), Daudi Fayar (Kenya), BamBam Frost (Sweden), and John Scott (Ireland). The two-week festival will also feature works by New York-based artists Hadar Ahuvia and Tatyana Tenenbaum, J. Bouey, Jasmine Hearn, Tiffany Mills, Ricarrdo Valentine, and Sugar Vendil. Performances will be streamed live from La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre and Downstairs Theatre, with additional performances outdoors at Downtown Art for limited, in-person audiences. A live stream of Ballet Hispánico’s En Familia, a virtual performance narrated by Artistic Director and CEO Eduardo Vilaro showcasing excerpts from the company’s repertoire – Con Brazos Abiertos and Club Havana.
