The Maplewood Township, South Orange Village, SOMA Cross Cultural Works and the AAPI Community come together to recognize and celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. These organizations stand in solidarity, the focus is on education, healing and creating joy as we honor the richness and diversity of Asian and Pacific Islander cultures with an exciting lineup of family oriented activities and programs. The South Orange Performing Arts Center will share Chen’s Awakening free on demand throughout the Month of May. Highlights include Chen’s Truth Bound, Introspection, Luminescence, and Shadow Force. The 2021 La MaMa Moves! Dance Festival will feature works by Morgan Bullock (US), Gerald Casel (US), Daudi Fayar (Kenya), BamBam Frost (Sweden), and John Scott (Ireland). The two-week festival will also feature works by New York-based artists Hadar Ahuvia and Tatyana Tenenbaum, J. Bouey, Jasmine Hearn, Tiffany Mills, Ricarrdo Valentine, and Sugar Vendil. Performances will be streamed live from La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre and Downstairs Theatre, with additional performances outdoors at Downtown Art for limited, in-person audiences. Dancespace Project's The Dream of the Audience, curated by artistic director Judy Hussie-Taylor brings artist to the virtual space to present works built while in-residence at Danspace’s historic venue in St. Mark’s Church, and more. The Dream of the Audience features the premiere of a new film by Ishmael Houston-Jones in collaboration with josé e. abad, Snowflake Calvert, Keith Hennessy, and Kevin O’Connor followed by live conversation with Houston-Jones & Miguel Gutierrez. Also featured will be films by Okwui Okpokwasili, Eiko Otake with Joan Jonas, and Reggie Wilson. All films will be available for online viewing July 1-Aug 31. Find out more here
