Under founder, Joan Myers Brown, PHILADANCO! returns for the Kimmel Center's 2017-18 season with H-I-S-T-O-R-Y, a selection of works honoring “…a past often left out of the history books,” according to the release. Slated for this season are: Jawole Willa Jo Zollar’s Walking with Pearl about historic choreographer and dancer Pearl Primus; the premiere of Pieces of My Heart, by Sonia Dawkins based on the poems of August Wilson; plus works by Geoffrey Holder, Louis Johnson and more. For their annual five-week season, included on the programs are world premieres Victoria by Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, and Members Don’t Get Weary by Ailey dancer Jamar Roberts, plus new productions by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar (Shelter - 1992), Twyla Tharp (The Golden Section - 1983) and Talley Beatty (Stack Up - 1983). The Opening Night Gala Benefit performance with host Janelle Monáe will feature a variety of one-night-only performances plus Revelations with live musicians and singers. Other season highlights include the Family Matinee Series which runs every Saturday afternoon, plus the Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve performances. The artistic director is Robert Battle. Tesseract “…is the result of a multi-year collaboration between choreographers Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener and pioneering video artist (and fellow Merce Cunningham Dance Company alumnus) Charles Atlas… [that explores]… the body in relation to space and time, the work consists of two parts: a 3D dance film and live performance with video capture and projection into the stage space,” according to the release. Sculptor Isamu Noguchi collaborated with five choreographers: George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, Erick Hawkins and Ruth Page and for the this program, some dances with Noguchi’s work will be performed, plus Dakin Hart, Senior Curator, Noguchi Museum and Dr. Joellen Meglin and Page will lead a discussion.
