Under founder, Joan Myers Brown, PHILADANCO! returns for the Kimmel Center's 2017-18 season with H-I-S-T-O-R-Y, a selection of works honoring “…a past often left out of the history books,” according to the release.  Slated for this season are: Jawole Willa Jo Zollar’s Walking with Pearl about historic choreographer and dancer Pearl Primus; the premiere of Pieces of My Heart, by Sonia Dawkins based on the poems of August Wilson; plus works by Geoffrey Holder, Louis Johnson and more.  Find out more here
 
The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
New York City Center
Until  – December 31
For their annual five-week season, included on the programs are world premieres Victoria by Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, and Members Don’t Get Weary by Ailey dancer Jamar Roberts, plus new productions by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar (Shelter - 1992), Twyla Tharp (The Golden Section - 1983)  and Talley Beatty (Stack Up - 1983). The Opening Night Gala Benefit performance with host Janelle Monáe will feature a variety of one-night-only performances plus Revelations with live musicians and singers. Other season highlights include the Family Matinee Series which runs every Saturday afternoon, plus the Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve performances.  The artistic director is Robert Battle. Yamazaki and his Company will present the world premiere of Darkness Odyssey Part 2: I or Hallucination, where “…philosophy, dance and folklore merge in…[this]…second installment …[of the]… trilogy, which explores the idea of the body as a black hole, absorbing all that it encounters. Juniper will premiere Clear & Sweet , “…a multi-disciplinary [work] incorporating dance and live singing based on an inquiry into Sacred Harp Singing,” notes the release.   Find out more here 
 
Hip Hop Nutcracker – Various Artists

The annual contemporary version of the holiday favorite returns with performances by MC Kurtis Blow twice: United Palace Theater (12/14) and NJPAC (12/15). Find out more here  

Indah M. Walsh
Danspace Project
December 14 - 16

Walsh will present homespun (please remove your shoes) "...a participatory dance gathering intended to challenge assumptions and behavior at live performances. homespun creates a space to gather, interact, and enjoy our collective stories while interrogating expectations and of traditional performance," notes the release.  Find out more here 

Charles Atlas/Rashaun Mitchell/Silas Riener

Tesseract “…is the result of a multi-year collaboration between choreographers Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener and pioneering video artist (and fellow Merce Cunningham Dance Company alumnus) Charles Atlas… [that explores]… the body in relation to space and time, the work consists of two parts: a 3D dance film and live performance with video capture and projection into the stage space,” according to the release.  Find out more here

Some rarely-seen dances by Isadora Duncan  including Russian Workers Songs and two Scriabin Etudes: The Crossing and The Revolutionary Etudeare slated for this season.  Find out more here
 
Fridays at Noon - Sculptor Isamu Noguchi
92nd Street Y
December 15
Sculptor Isamu Noguchi collaborated with five choreographers: George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, Erick Hawkins and Ruth Page and for the this program, some dances with Noguchi’s work will be performed, plus Dakin Hart, Senior Curator, Noguchi Museum and Dr. Joellen Meglin and Page will lead a discussion.  Find out more here
 
Fana Fraser & NIC Kay

Movement Research Center’s 2017 Van Lier Fellows, Fraser and Kay will share an evening.  Fraser with Martell Ruffin, will present no talking while eating fish a bone will stick in your throat (work in process), while Kay offers the site-specific work, GET WELL SOON! Under artistic director and choreographer Abdel R. Salaam, Forces of Nature Dance Company brings their annual “A Kwanzaa Celebration” to NJPAC with special guests’ poets Ntozake Shange and Sonia Sanchez as part of NJPAC's Kwanzaa festivities.  Find out more here

    I am a performer, historian, consultant and dance writer.
